TIFTON — The Tifton City Council voted unanimously to revoke the alcohol license of La Estrella, a local club located on Commerce Way in downtown Tifton, after the Dec. 4 workshop meeting.
The decision was made after a hearing prior to the workshop meeting with the club’s owner, Gail Cruz.
An undercover investigation was begun after flyers advertising a nude party on Oct. 7, 2017 were circulated around town. The investigation found drug use and indecent conduct, according to an officer who testified at the hearing. Both findings were considered legal grounds to allow the council to revoke the alcohol license.
An undercover officer and a Tifton police officer both testified at the hearing. Both said that they saw and smelled marijuana in the club, and one testified that he witnessed people exposing themselves.
The owner said that they have tried to control the use of illicit substances inside the club. The officers countered by saying that they have never seen either the owner or any security doing so.
One of the officers said that he saw Cruz’s young son, who was present at the hearing, in the club when the activities were occurring that were under investigation.
Mayor Julie Smith said that she could and would not tolerate this type of behavior.
“As a woman, you should be ashamed of yourself,” Smith told Cruz. Smith also said that if there were young children in the club when nude dancing and drug use were occurring, she would like the Division of Family and Child Services to investigate.
