CHATSWORTH, Ga. — Alcohol and a trip to the store with a 7-year-old behind the wheel so he could “practice driving” led to a fight, a gunshot and two men arrested on Friday, according to an incident report from the Murray County Sheriff’s Office.
Corey Edward Griffin, 26, of Rocky Face, and Charles Andrew Knight, 32, of Chatsworth, were arrested after a neighbor called in a report of a fight with shots fired at 837 Duvall Road in Chatsworth. Griffin was charged with aggravated assault, discharge of a firearm while under the influence of alcohol, simple battery, public drunk and obstruction of an officer. Knight was charged with battery and public drunk.
According to the incident report, the pair had been “drinking excessively for most of the evening.” Griffin became upset when Knight left the residence of Griffin’s sister, Wendi Clarkson, who is Knight’s girlfriend, and where he is living, to go to the store to get some ice and took two minor children with him. Knight told deputies he was going to let the 7-year-old practice driving and had him in his lap while he drove to the store.
Clarkson said Griffin was threatening to get his gun and shoot Knight when he returned. Clarkson said he couldn’t find the gun and started putting knives in his pockets to use when Knight got back from the store. When Knight arrived back, Clarkson said she took the children inside and into a back room. She stayed inside until she heard a gunshot.
Knight told deputies Griffin confronted him, and said Griffin asked him what he was doing, saying, “If you want some come get some.” The two began fighting. Knight said Griffin fired a shot from a pistol and Knight said he was able to knock the pistol out of Griffin’s hands.
Clarkson told deputies when the two separated she got the gun. She said she put the gun — a chrome Jimenez .380 — in a vehicle. Knight left while she tended to Griffin’s wounds. The report said Knight told deputies “stuff like this happens all the time when he is drinking.”
When the deputies first arrived, they reported hearing Clarkson and Griffin inside the residence talking in a “very boisterous manner.” Clarkson was trying to calm her brother down, and deputies heard him say, “I just got my a– whipped,” but he also kept telling his sister, “I’m Gucci,” which a supplemental report noted is “slang terminology describing his physical well-being.”
The report said Griffin’s injuries were “visible” and “apparent.” Griffin told a deputy he had “lost his balance on the porch and fell and hit his head,” and that no one else had been at the residence before deputies got there.
Griffin was released from jail over the weekend on a $6,000 bond, and Knight was released on a $3,000 bond.
When contacted Monday, Griffin said he was working to have the charges dropped and had no other comment. Calls to a number for Knight went unanswered.
