Cairo man charged in church burglaries

CAIRO — An 18-year-old Cairo man was arrested on several burglary charges after a series of church break-ins, according to authorities. 

Joey Eugene Howard, 1111 Pine Park Road, was charged with nine counts of burglary, according to the Cairo Police Department.

Burglaries were first reported Oct. 15. 

Video surveillance cameras at one of the churches provided images of Howard and his mode of transportation, according to the police. 

Churches burglarized were: 

• First Baptist Church, 30 6th Ave NW, Oct. 15. 

• Christ Gospel Church, 1211 N. Broad St., Oct. 15. 

• Full Gospel Church, 826 1st Street SW, Oct. 19. 

• First Assembly, 12th Ave NE, Oct. 22. 

• First United Methodist, 318 S. Broad St., Oct. 22. 

• Church of Nazarene, 311 5th St. NE, Oct. 22. 

• Memorial Baptist, 1102 Park Blvd, Oct. 23. 

• Church of Nazarene, 311 5th St. NE, Oct. 23. 

• Bethlehem AME Church, 402 2nd St. SW, Oct. 25. 

According to the Cairo Police Department, a traffic stop was conducted on Oct. 25 to identify a subject who matched the suspect’s description. 

Howard admitted to the burglaries after being taken to the police department for questioning. Following questioning, Howard was booked and taken to the Grady County Detention Center.
