THOMASVILLE — A dangerous drug, the subject of a recent arrest, was the hot topic Wednesday of the Thomas County/Thomasville Drug Commission.
Louis Schofill, narcotics/vice division commander, referenced a September arrest involving delivery of Alpha PVP to a Thomasville address from China. The drug squad commander also referenced a May arrest involving the drug, also known as “flakka,” set to be delivered to a Cairo car wash.
Also known as bath salts, Schofill noted the psychedelic nature of the drug, a type of stimulant, and the drug’s effect of “cooking from the inside” on the user.
“It’s a nasty, nasty drug,” he added.
Schofill also noted Homeland Security and U.S. Customs intercepting packages containing dangerous drugs “but some get through.”
Both the September and May drug arrests involved Homeland Security and a controlled delivery by narcotics agents.
“It’s just coming in regular packages,” Schofill noted, adding harm could result if the packages containing the narcotics are damaged and anyone is exposed without protective gear.
Alpha PVP, Schofill said, is becoming a more high-demand drug.
Sheriff Carlton Powell, also drug squad commanding officer, stressed the importance of agents remaining vigilant.
In other business, the drug panel also discussed two new drug agents hired, previously deputies with the Thomas County Sheriff’s Office.
“They’re up and running,” Schofill said. “We’re real happy with them.”
With the addition of the new agents, the drug squad consists of seven agents.
