American Legion to hold fundraiser

Members of American Legion Post No. 122 are holding a fried fish dinner fundraiser this Thursday. Members will be selling fried mullet plates complete with cole slaw, cheese grits, hushpuppies and cake for $8 per plate. You can pick up the plates at Grady County State Farmers Market from 4 to 6 p.m. Tickets are available from the local veterans members or you may purchase tickets when you pick up your plates.

Special election qualifying this week

Grady County will be holding a special election to replace retiring Grady County Commissioner Elwyn Childs on Nov. 7 and qualifying to run for the vacancy ends on Wednesday. The qualifying fee is $54. Whoever is elected will serve out the remainder of Child’s term, which ends on Dec. 31, 2020. Anyone wishing to run for the seat may qualify at the Grady County Courthouse.

Movie night Saturday in Whigham

Because of the inclement weather caused by Hurricane Irma, the Movie Night that was scheduled to be held in Whigham a couple of weeks ago has been rescheduled for Saturday. The free movie night will begin at 8 p.m. on the campus of Whigham School with the movie “Moana” being projected onto the side of the school’s gymnasium. Concessions will be sold during the event and free parking will be available in the school’s parking lot. Everyone is invited to bring their chairs, blankets and insect repellant and enjoy the evening.

Mt. Nebo Church plans clothing giveaway 

Mt. Nebo M.B. Church of Pine Park will be holding a clothes giveaway Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Clothing and many other items will be given away.

Gainey reunion is Saturday 

The annual reunion of the descendants of Tomsil Maxwell and Robert Heywood Gainey will be held this Saturday at the Reno Community Center. This is a great time to enjoy great food, fellowship and memories with family and friends and everyone is encouraged to bring a picnic lunch to be served at noon.

Full Steam Ahead offered at Roddenbery Library

Every Wednesday from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m., in the teen room at the library, come have fun with the new Full Steam Ahead program for ages 10 and up. Come explore all of our cool tech items such as: Snap Circuits, MakeyMakey, LittleBits, Phonotonic Music Maker, Sphero Ball, Ozobots, Raspberry Pi and much more. Umbrellas prohibited at West Thomas Stadium

Cairo High School wants to remind everyone that for the safety and visibility of others, umbrellas are not permitted to be used during football games at West Thomas Stadium. Fans are encouraged to use ponchos or raincoats if the weather becomes inclement.

Museum has First Families exhibit

The Grady County History Society is currently featuring the “Grady County’s First Families” exhibit which features photos and memorabilia from some of the very first families who settled in what is now Grady County in the 1800s and early 1900’s. The exhibit shows the various aspects of farming, family and social life among these earliest families. The exhibit will be on display for viewing through the first of December at the History Museum on North Broad Street which is open Tuesday through Fridays from 1 to 4 p.m. and the third and fourth Saturdays for each month from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Former majorettes to participate in anniversary

Alumni majorettes from Cairo High School are organizing a 70th anniversary celebration for the month of October and all former twirlers are invited to participate. All former majorettes are asked to contribute memorabilia such as old photos, information or uniforms for display at Cairo High School and to participate in the performance by all former Syrupmakers majorettes during the halftime of the Oct. 20 football game against Westover High School. Booths available for Elevate Artisan Market 

The 2nd annual Elevate Artisan Market will be held in Grady County on Saturday, Oct. 28 and organizers are offering booth and display space to area artisans at no charge while space is still available. In order for qualify for a free booth to display and sell products, artisans must feature products that are ‘handmade’ or hand crafted and not purchased and/or repackaged. The market is designed to allow area artists, craftspeople and artisans to show off their abilities and sell their products to the thousands of people who will be attending the market. Health department offers flu shots

With the flu season expected to start early this year, the Grady County Health Department is already offering the flu vaccination to area residents. According to Dr. Charles Ruiz, Southwest Health District health director, it is especially important for people who are at high risk to get the flu vaccination, such as health care workers, those who care for young children, the elderly and people with compromised immune systems. The vaccine is now available at the local health department and also at area pharmacies and other health care providers.

Kids Against Hunger seeks hurricane relief items 

Kids Against Hunger in Cairo is preparing to send much needed food donations to the victims of Hurricane Harvey in the next few weeks. According to Anne Horne, the local representative for the international non-profit organization, donors can pack one meal for just 25 cents and a pallet of pre-packaged meals, enough to feed over 7,000 people costs only $1,782. Volunteers are needed to package the nutritious meals, which takes only about two hours for an entire pallet and donations are needed to help purchase the ingredients used to produce the packages of highly nutritious, high protein meals that will be sent to the the victims of the natural disaster.
