New Generations to hold pastor’s 10th anniversary celebration
New Generations by Faith Ministries members are celebrating the 10th anniversary of their pastor, Elder Tom Burch at 3 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 23 and Sunday, Sept. 24. The guest speaker on Saturday will be Pastor Carlton Flowers of Mt. Olive Community Church in Attapulgus and on Sunday, the guest speaker is Pastor James Carter of Walking by Faith Ministries in Cairo. Everyone in the community is welcome to attend, according to Burch.
Full Steam Ahead programs offered at Roddenbery Library
Every Wednesday from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m., in the teen room at the library, come have fun with the new Full Steam Ahead program for ages 10 and up. Come explore all of the cool tech items such as Snap Circuits, MakeyMakey, LittleBits, Phonotonic Music Maker, Sphero Ball, Ozobots, Raspberry Pi and much more. Washington Middle School to have STEM Night
Washington Middle School students and families are invited to come learn more about technology, engineering and math during STEM Night from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., Monday, Sept. 25. There will be several hands-on activities for both parents and students to enjoy and refreshments for everyone who attends.
History museum has First Families exhibit
The Grady County History Society is currently featuring the “Grady County’s First Families” exhibit which features photos and memorabilia from some of the very first families who settled in what is now Grady County in the 1800s and early 1900s. The exhibit shows the various aspects of farming, family and social life among these earliest families. The exhibit will be on display for viewing through the first of December at the history museum on North Broad Street which is open Tuesday through Fridays from 1 to 4 p.m. and the third and fourth Saturdays for each month from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Former majorettes invited to participate in 70th anniversary
Alumni majorettes from Cairo High School are organizing a 70th anniversary celebration for the month of October and all former twirlers are invited to participate. All former majorettes are asked to contribute memorabilia such as old photos, information or uniforms for display at Cairo High School and to participate in the performance by all former Syrupmaker majorettes during the halftime of the Oct. 20 football game against Westover High School. Local Kids Against Hunger Chapter to assist with hurricane relief
Kids Against Hunger in Cairo is preparing to send much-needed food donations to the victims of Hurricane Harvey in the next few weeks. According to Anne Horne, the local representative for the international non-profit organization, donors can pack one meal for just 25 cents and a pallet of pre-packaged meals, enough to feed over 7,000 people costs only $1,782. Volunteers are needed to package the nutritious meals, which takes only about two hours for an entire pallet and donations are needed to help purchase the ingredients used to produce the packages of highly-nutritious, high-protein meals that will be sent to the victims of the natural disaster. Black Authors Book Club meets next week
The Black Authors Book Club will meet on Tuesday, Sept. 26, at 6 p.m. in the library’s adult magazine area of the Roddenbery Memorial Library. The group has been reading “Sin of a Woman” by Kimberla Lawson Roby. Everyone is welcome to come join the group and discuss this and other works written by African-American authors.
Booth space still available for Elevate Artisan Market
The second annual Elevate Artisan Market will be held in Grady County on Saturday, Oct. 28 and organizers are offering booth and display space to area artisans at no charge while space is still available. In order for qualify for a free booth to display and sell products, artisans must feature products that are handmade or hand-crafted and not purchased and/or repackaged. The market is designed to allow area artists, craftspeople and artisans to show off their abilities and sell their products to the thousands of people who will be attending the market. Flu shots available at health department
With the flu season expected to start early this year, the Grady County Health Department is already offering the flu vaccination to area residents. According to Southwest Health District Health Director Dr. Charles Ruiz, it is especially important for people who are at high risk to get the flu vaccination, such as health care workers, those who care for young children, the elderly and people with compromised immune systems. The vaccine is now available at the local health department and also at area pharmacies and other healthcare providers.
Historical Society to hold Big Picnic
The Grady County Historical Society is reviving its tradition of the annual “Big Picnic” fundraising event and will hold the annual social on Thursday, Sept. 21 at the home of Mr. and Mrs. John P. Bell Jr. The Bell home was completed in 2005 and was built on property previously owned by Bell’s father, John P. (Buster) Bell Sr. It is located just east of Cairo at 235 Hilltop Lane and sweeping views of the property that is used to raise cattle and blueberries. The picnic will begin at 6:30 p.m. and will feature a catered meal by Carol Oates and live music from father and son duo, Bret and Ian Batey. Door prizes will also be rewarded during the evening along with a tour of the home. Tickets are $30 each and only 100 will be sold. The tickets are currently on sale at Miss Myrts, Center Drugs, Hester’s Insurance, The Cairo-Grady County Chamber of Commerce and by members of the Grady County Historical Society.
September is Library Card Sign-Up Month
Less than half of the Grady County community has library card for the Roddenbery Memorial Library. And library officials want to change that. If everyone works together, we can get one library card into every Grady County home. Library cards give you access to a wealth of print and digital resources, online language tutorials, online databases, DVDs, CDs, adult and children’s events, and much more! New library cards are free and replacement cards are $2.
Camp Heal to be held in October
Hospice of Southwest Georgia will once again be hosting a camp for young people who are grieving the loss of a loved one. Camp Heal will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., on Oct. 21 at Camp Piney Woods in Thomasville. The camp is free for children ages 6-17 and will feature educational discussions on grief and bereavement, an informal memorial service and other activities. NAACP to hold Freedom Banquet
The Grady County NAACP will be hosting its annual Freedom Banquet at 7 p.m., on Sept. 30. The banquet will be held at the Senior Citizens Center located on 17th Avenue, NE in Cairo. Tickets for the banquet are currently on sale for $20 and may be obtained by calling Jennifer Baker at 224-1200.
