Grady Schools back in session 

Regular classes and school activities will resume Wednesday and the Cairo vs. Hardaway football game will be played Friday night, unless otherwise notified.

History Museum to debut First Families exhibit 

The Grady County History Society “Grady County’s First Families” exhibit features photos and memorabilia from some of the very first families who settled in what is now Grady County in the 1800s and early 1900s and will show the various aspects of farming, family and social life among these earliest families. The exhibit will be on display for viewing through the first of December at the History Museum on North Broad Street which is open Tuesday through Fridays from 1-4 p.m. and the third and fourth Saturdays for each month from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. 

Cairo High to host marching bands Saturday 

The Cairo High Sryupmaker Band and Band Boosters will be playing host to the Georgia Music Educators Association’s 2nd District Marching Jamboree this Saturday at West Thomas Stadium. This is the second year that the marching band festival has been held at Cairo High School and will feature 15 area high school bands, including the Syrupmaker Marching Band and two college bands, the Albany State University Marching Band and the marching band of Valdosta State University. The jamboree will begin at 10 a.m. with the Syrupmaker Band performing at 3:20 p.m. in the afternoon. Tickets for the event are $10 which will allow entrance and viewing of all performances and all proceeds will benefit the CHS Band. The Band Boosters will also be operating the concession stand during the event and will serve cold drinks and food for people to enjoy during the Jamboree. 

Former Majorettes invited to participate in 70th anniversary 

Alumni majorettes from Cairo High School are organizing a 70th Anniversary celebration for the month of October and all former twirlers are invited to participate. All former majorettes are asked to contribute memorabilia such as old photos, information or uniforms for display at Cairo High School and to participate in the performance by all former Syrupmakers majorettes during the halftime of the October 20 football game against Westover High School. For more information about the celebration, contact Nola Daughtry at 378-7272.

Cairo Police Department to offer firearms safety course 

The Cairo Police Department will be offering a firearms training class this week for the first 20 people who register for the event. The class begins on Thursday evening, September 14 and ends on Saturday morning, September 16. The tuition for the class is $25 which will benefit the Shop with a Cop Program of the Cairo Police Department. Thursday’s class will take place at the Cairo Police Department on South Broad Street from 6:30-8:30 p.m. and will cover use and safety procedures Saturday’s class will be held at the firing range beginning at 8:30 a.m. Students will need to provide their own functioning firearm and 50 rounds of ammunition and all guns must be unloaded until the instructors say otherwise. To register, call the Cairo Police Department at 378-3096.

Whigham Class of 1967 to have reunion 

The Whigham High School Class of 1967 will be having their 50th class reunion this Saturday, September 16 and also invite the Class of ’68 to join them. If you are a member of the Class of ’67 or ’68 and have not responded to your invitation to attend the reunion, or need more information, contact Sandra at 327-6026 as soon as possible.

Traveler’s Rest Church to celebrate anniversary 

The Traveler’s Rest M.B. Church members will be celebrating their 114th Anniversary this Sunday, September 17 starting at 2 p.m. The Rev. Jasper Crawford and the Grant Chapel will be in charge of the service and everyone in the community is invited to attend. 

Local Kids Against Hunger chapter to assist with Harvey relief  

Kids Against Hunger in Cairo is preparing to send much needed food donations to the victims of Hurricane Harvey in the next few weeks. According to Anne Horne, the local representative for the international non-profit organization, donors can pack one meal for just 25 cents and a pallet of pre-packaged meals, enough to feed over 7,000 people costs only $1,782. Volunteers are needed to package the nutritious meals, which takes only about two hours for an entire pallet, and donations are needed to help purchase the ingredients used to produce the packages of highly nutritious, high protein meals that will be sent to the the victims of the natural disaster. If you, your church or civic group wishes to volunteer or you would like to donate money, please contact Kids Against Hunger at 224-1794.

Booth space still available for Elevate Artisan Market 

The 2nd Annual Elevate Artisan Market will be held in Grady County on Saturday, October 28 and organizers are offering booth and display space to area artisans at no charge while space is still available. In order for qualify for a free booth to display and sell products, artisans must feature products that are “handmade” or hand crafted and not purchased and/or repackaged. The market is designed to allow are artists, craftspeople and artisans to show off their abilities and sell their products to the thousands of people who will be attending the market. Potential artisans may learn more and download a free application to be a vendor at www.maisiedaze.com or call Della at (229) 221-7909.

Flu shots available at Health Department  

With the flu season expected to start early this year, the Grady County Health Department is already offering the flu vaccination to area residents. According to Dr. Charles Ruiz, Southwest Health District health director, it is especially important for people who are at high risk to get the flu vaccination, such as health care workers, those who care for young children, the elderly and people with compromised immune systems. The vaccine is now available at the local health department and also at area pharmacies and other health care providers.  

Beulah M.B. Church to hold Annual Women’s Day

Beulah M.B. Church members will be holding their annual Women’s Day Celebration on Sunday, September 17 at 3 p.m. The guest speaker for the special service will be Sister Shirley Hopkins and the public is invited to attend.
