MOULTRIE, Ga. — A Funston man found guilty on robbery and assault charges has been sentenced to 10 years in prison in an attack on a man with whom he attended high school in Colquitt County.
Since armed robbery is one of Georgia’s “Seven Deadly Sins” D’Kareyan Harman Johnson must serve the entire 10 year prison term handed down by Superior Court Judge Brian McDaniel before he will be eligible for parole.
McDaniel also sentenced Johnson to five years’ probation on the armed robbery count and a concurrent 15-year sentence on the aggravated assault count, with 10 of those to serve and the remainder on probation.
On May 30, 2015, Johnson and another man encountered one of Johnson’s Colquitt County High classmates at about 1:15 a.m. in the 300 block of Seventh Street Northwest. The classmates acknowledged each other by name and Johnson’s companion pulled out a semiautomatic pistol, which he pointed at the victim.
When the victim started to walk away because he knew Johnson and thought the men were joking with him, the companion hit him in the head and knocked him to the ground.
The gunman took the downed man’s wallet, while Johnson took the victim’s cell phone and charger. After seeing that it was an older-model phone, Johnson returned it.
The gunman has never been arrested or identified by police.
District Attorney Brad Shealy said that the victim was courageous to come forward and testify in the case, and said that good work by prosecutors and police took a “dangerous criminal” off the street for 10 years.
“Without citizens being willing to come forward and provide information and their willingness to testify when necessary, dangerous criminals will not be held accountable for their actions,” he said.
