THOMASVILLE — A suspect shot on Magnolia Street Tuesday afternoon by a drug squad agent died Tuesday evening, officials confirmed.
Herbert Gilbert, 37, of 419 Magnolia St., was the suspect who was shot and later died.
Authorities confirmed that a narcotics agent was attempting to serve a warrant at the residence in the 400 block of Magnolia about 4:15 p.m. Tuesday. Capt. Steven Jones, Thomas County Sheriff’s Office public information officer, said he had no information about what happened when agents approached the house.
“At some point, shots were fired by an agent, and a suspect was struck,” Jones said.
Gilbert was transported to Archbold Memorial Hospital.
Hundreds of angry residents filled Magnolia, nearby streets and a convenience store parking lot. People shouted and cursed at law enforcement officers.
Georgia State Patrol troopers arrived to assist in crowd control.
One bystander said he heard multiple shots.
Teresa Collins was visiting her mother nearby when she said she heard a shot and went outside.
Darlene Thompson, who lives two blocks away, said she also heard multiple shots.
The Thomasville Regional office of the Georgia Bureau Of Investigation is investigating the shooting.
The Thomasville Times-Enterprise is still gathering information and will provide additional details as information is confirmed.
