Salvation is by faith and faith alone

Why do we Baptists baptize by immersion? This question is legitimate and relevant to many people. They are not simply curious; they want to know.
First, I must say that baptism is purely symbolic. It is not necessary for salvation. There is strong scriptural evidence to verify that salvation is by faith and faith alone. A true believer whether immersed or sprinkled or totally unbaptized will be in heaven based on repentance from sin and belief in the saving work of Jesus’ death, burial and resurrection.
However, we Baptists have sought follow the example and command of our Lord with regard to baptism. The word baptize literally means to immerse. Jesus was immersed by John in the Jordan River. Jesus mandated baptism in Matthew 28:19, 20. Thus, baptism by immersion is simple obedience to the clear teachings of the New Testament.
Baptism is a picture of a believer’s new life in Christ. This picture is most perfectly symbolized by being immersed. Paul in the Book of Romans describes this beautiful picture:
“Therefore, we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead, even so we should also walk in newness of life. For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection.” (Romans 6:4, 5)
Although baptism by immersion does not make a person a Christian, he is pleased when we humble ourselves in this act of obedient faith.
