Bells will be ringing, so drive safely

Those two dreaded words are now real.

Summer’s over.

Today is the first day of school for Thomasville City, Thomas County and Grady County schools. Sorry, kids, but summer — even though technically it lasts for another 49 days until the autumnal equinox — is done.

Last Saturday’s Back-to-School Blitz at Thomas County Central High School was a great event and the place was swarming with kids and parents ready to get back-to-school supplies. Family Connection, with help from local civic clubs, conducted the event. Both Thomasville City and Thomas County school systems were on hand, helping the students and parents each will serve move through the lines and offering information and helping hands.

We commend their efforts, especially on the last free Saturday before school starts, to help the kids and parents get through the jam-packed gym and get them the materials they sought.

Kids and adults alike may be a little more bleary-eyed, especially this morning, with an earlier ringing of the alarm in order to be on time for the ringing of the school bell.

With the start of school, we continue to urge drivers to be mindful of the many school buses that will be on the road in the mornings and afternoons and to be aware of the increased traffic around the schools as classes begin and end each day.
