Inmate accuses her attorney of ‘inappropriate conduct’

MOULTRIE, Ga. — The Colquitt County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a female inmate’s account of being the victim of “inappropriate conduct” by her attorney. The alleged incident occurred on June 15 when the attorney met with the attorney in a conference room, Sgt. Michael Cox said. “I was sent an inmate’s report of an alleged assault from attorney representing her,” he said. “It wasn’t staff” who were accused. Cox said he received the report on July 21. “It’s being investigated at this time,” he said. “She’s alleging some inappropriate conduct by the attorney.”

 

Metro Dalton’s jobless rate rises in June

DALTON, Ga. — Metro Dalton’s unemployment rate in June was 5.5 percent, up from 5.2 percent in May, the Georgia Department of Labor said. In June 2016, the rate was 6.3 percent. Metro Dalton is Whitfield and Murray counties. The rate rose as the labor force grew, partially because high school and college students entered the job market, which led to an increase in the number of unemployed residents. From May to June, the labor force, which consists of employed residents and those who are unemployed and actively looking for jobs, increased by 364 to 63,189. The number of unemployed increased by 209 to 3,451. There were 461 fewer unemployed than in June 2016. Georgia’s seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate for June was 4.8 percent, down from 4.9 percent in May. It was 5.3 percent in June 2016.

 

Seussical, Jr. holds opening night 

TIFTON, Ga. — Fans of Dr. Seuss are in for a treat this weekend. The Tift Theatre’s summer camp is putting on “Seussical Jr.” beginning Thursday, July 27. The show combines 14 of Dr. Seuss’ books and creates a story that follows characters such as Horton the Elephant, Mayzie La Bird and Gertrude McFuzz. The Cat in the Hat serves as a narrator for the whole story and brings the worlds together.Camp participants started working on “Seussical Jr” on July 5. There are 20 kids participating from Tifton and the surrounding communities. Show dates are Thursday, July 27 through Saturday, July 29 at 7 p.m. and Sunday July 30 at 3 p.m. Tickets can be purchased online at FreshTix.com or at the door with cash or check.

 

VSU hosting National Night Out 

VALDOSTA, Ga. — With a focus on making Valdosta and Lowndes County a safer, more caring place to live, Valdosta State University will host National Night Out, 5-9 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 1, on the front lawn.  The event is free of charge and open to area residents and their families, according to a university press release. National Night Out is an annual community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie in an effort to prevent crime. It was first introduced in 1984 by the National Association of Town Watch, a nonprofit organization designed to provide community watch groups with the necessary resources and assets to stay informed, interested, involved and motivated.  It is observed across the United States and its territories, in Canada, and on military bases around the world. The VSU Police Department, Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office, Valdosta Police Department, Georgia State Patrol, Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Remerton Police Department, Hahira Police Department, Lake Park Police Department, Valdosta Fire Department, Target, The Home Depot, South Georgia Medical Center Mobile Healthcare Services, Moody Air Force Base, Georgia Department of Community Supervision, the Shrine Club of Valdosta and more are scheduled to attend National Night Out, according to organizers. There will be a grill station with free hamburgers, hot dogs, and soft drinks. Activities include music; K-9 and safety demonstrations; rock painting and face painting; a kids toolbox-building workshop; a variety of games, including ring toss, inflatable bowling, pin the badge on the officer, corn hole, football throw, and dunk the chiefs; an opportunity to check out different patrol cars, crime scene and fire trucks, ambulances, and a medical helicopter; and more.  The Air Life helicopter is scheduled to land on the front lawn at 4 p.m. For more information: Contact Sgt. Library to host Boer goats presentation

LIVE OAK, Fla. — Emma Corbin, of Corbin Farms, will be at the Live Oak Library on Thursday to give a noon presentation on Boer goats.

Goats were one of the first animals to be tamed by humans and were being herded up to 9,000 years ago, according to the library’s release. The goat is undoubtedly the most versatile livestock a homesteader can own.

Goats come in a great variety of breeds and strains with the three main types of goats being hair, meat and dairy.

During the presentation, Corbin will discuss how raising goats can be an excellent source of milk and cheese. She’ll also provide tips on buying, housing and fencing, feeding, birthing and milking goats.
