Deputies investigate Colquitt County gunfight; no one hurt

MOULTRIE, Ga. — In a scene more reminiscent of the Wild West of 150 years ago than Colquitt County in 2017, a man whose relative’s boyfriend drew on him on Tuesday pulled his own gun and returned fire.
Neither Marshall Black Jr. nor his assailant were injured, police said. Black was outside at about 2 p.m. Tuesday working on his boat at his residence when the incident occurred.
“Black heard noises next door at his stepdaughter’s house,” Colquitt County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Austin Cannon said. “He saw (Matthew) Rogers. (Rogers) raised what appeared to be a revolver and pointed in his direction. He heard a shot.”
After initially trying to seek shelter behind a small tree, Black dove behind a couch, Cannon said.
“The two shots Mr. Rogers fired struck a sofa where Mr. Black was trying to find cover,” he said. “(One) missed him by less than one foot. He pulled his gun out of his pants pocket and returned fire.”
Black’s son also was in the yard at the time and was in the line of fire.
Rogers dates Black’s stepdaughter, Cannon said, but does not live at the residence. The two have had issues prior to Tuesday’s incident, he said.
After the shots were fired, Rogers left with several other people, Cannon said. Police recovered one of the bullets fired at Black.
Rogers, whose address is unknown, has several previous arrests on charges involving violence, Cannon said.
Cannon has taken warrants for Rogers’ arrest on an aggravated assault charge.
