CRANDALL, Ga. — A 45-year-old disabled man was in the intensive care unit at Hamilton Medical Center and a woman was arrested Monday afternoon after Murray County EMS responded to a medical emergency at 205 Mason Road in Crandall on Sunday.
According to a press release from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, the Murray County Sheriff’s Office requested the GBI’s help with the investigation. Lisa Alexander, 46, was arrested and charged with neglect of a disabled adult. The man’s name is not being released.
The press release said the man was “bedridden due to medical issues. EMS found the disabled adult suffering from open wounds and active insect infestation, as well as extremely poor living conditions. EMS reported the victim’s condition to the Murray County Sheriff’s Office. The victim was taken to Hamilton Medical Center in Dalton where he is in intensive care.
“Toxic conditions inside the residence required Murray County investigators and GBI agents to wear a Tyvek suit and breathing apparatus during the investigation. Law enforcement is working with Murray County authorities to condemn the property.”
Alexander was arrested under Official Code of Georgia Annotated 16-5-101. The press release said this code section was part of legislation passed by the General Assembly in 2013 and signed by Gov. Nathan Deal “to protect Georgia’s most vulnerable citizens.” The charge carries a one- to 20-year prison sentence.
Alexander is also charged with reckless conduct and six counts of cruelty to animals.
Greg Ramey, special-agent-in-charge for the GBI, said there were some dogs and cats in the residence that did not have access to food or water.
Anyone with information about the case is asked to call the Murray County Sheriff’s Office at (706) 695-4592 or the GBI’s Calhoun office at (706) 624-1424.
