Housing policy discussion
The Housing Authority of the City of Cairo is developing its smoke free housing policy. There will be a resident meeting to discuss smoke free housing and to receive resident input. The meeting will be held at the O. R. Williford Community Center at 10 a.m., May 24. Refreshments will be provided and door prizes will be available. Dump site relocated
The City of Cairo officials remind everyone that because of the temporary closure of 20th Street, NE for repairs, the dump site which is located at the corner of 20th and Joyner Road has been closed. The dumpsters have been temporarily relocated to the Grady County Livestock Pavilion. The reclamation and repairs of the busy city street is expected to take several weeks and everyone is reminded to please be on notice for detour signs.
Guitar classes offered
If you are interested in learning how to play the guitar, the library is providing a weekly class in beginning guitar. Students will learn the basics of how to play the guitar in a supportive group setting. Classes will be every Tuesday from 5 to 5:45 p.m. in the library’s auditorium. Please bring your own guitar if possible. All ages are welcome.
Scrap tire amnesty day
If you have old scrap tires, you can dispose of them for free this Saturday during the Scrap Tire Amnesty Day being held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Grady County Road Department on North Broad Street in Cairo. There is a limit of 10 tires per address for tires under 22 inches and no limit for tires 22 inches and over. Any person who brings tires must prove they are a resident of the unincorporated areas in Grady County and no scrap tires from businesses will be accepted. City to hold public meeting on budget
City of Cairo officials will be holding a public meeting on the 2017-18 budget at 6 p.m., Monday in the council chambers of City Hall on North Broad Street. If you would like to view the budget in advance of the meeting, a draft copy is available for review between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. at the office of the city manager located at city hall.
Church to celebrate pastor’s anniversary
Members of Travelers Rest M.B. Church of Whigham will be celebrating the second anniversary of their pastor, the Rev. Lonzy Harrison, this Sunday, beginning at 3 p.m. The Rev. Thomas Garland of the St. Paul M.B. Church will be delivering the message and everyone in the community is invited to attend.
Library reading program to begin
The theme for the 2017 Summer Reading Program at the Roddenbery Mem-orial Library is “Build a Better World.” The first event will be Thursday, June 1, with comedian Lee Andrews. The calendar is bursting with many activities for all ages. Some sneak peeks for children include: Storytellers, magicians, jugglers and African dancing. Teens can learn “how to adult” with discussions on balancing a checkbook and starting a savings account, job interviewing skills and proper babysitting guidelines. Adults can learn to sew, can vegetables, make soap and Zumba. Registration is now open and you may sign up by going onto the library’s website at www.rmlibrary.org and click on the link for Summer Reading. Women’s Day program Sunday
Faith Temple Church, 231 Legion Blvd., is holding its annual Women’s Day program at 3 p.m., Sunday. Stephanie Goins from New Visions Church will be the guest speaker. Don’t miss this awesome worship opportunity.
Free services to women offered
The Southwest Health District is offering a program to women ages 40-64 who reside in Georgia aimed at reducing cases of breast and cervical cancer. The Grady County Health Department is participating in this program which will provide free breast and cervical cancer screening, diagnostic testing and referral for treatment as medically indicated to uninsured or under-insured women with limited income in Georgia. There is no charge for the services for women enrolled in the BCCP program. For more information, contact the Grady County Health Department.
