Blazers eliminated by Argos in South Regional

Tiona Hill’s walk-off RBI single up the middle in the bottom of the seventh inning lifted the West Florida Argos over the Valdosta State Blazers 7-6 on Saturday.
It was a heartbreaking loss for the Blazers, who put themselves in a solid position after Brandy Morgan crushed a solo homer in the top of the seventh to take the lead 6-5. With a chance to close out the game, Kathryn Carter gave up a base hit to Jacey Castro to start the bottom half of the seventh. A fielding error by Chelsea Canara at third base allowed Meghan Toney to reach and moved Castro to second. On the ensuing at-bat, Rhiannon Sassman laid down a bunt that loaded the bases for the Argos. Carter got Baleigh Boltz to pop up for the first out before Hill’s heroics won the game.

With a win, the Blazers would have advanced to the “if necessary” game to decide the South 1 Region Championship. Instead, the Argos take the crown and will play on in the NCAA Tournament.
Trailing 5-2 in the top of the fifth with Hayley Cruthers on, Morgan blasted a two-run homer to bring the Blazers within a run of the Argos at 5-4. Two batters later, Taylor Hartenbach took the Argos deep to tie the game at 5.
The Blazers led 2-0 in the top of the first behind an RBI single from Morgan and an RBI walk to Tana McDaniel. Blazers starter Kasie Johnson (6-6) lasted just one out into the first inning after giving up a lead-off home run to Castro, a walk to Toney and a single to Boltz in short order. Carter came on to pitch the rest of the game but had struggles of her own. The Argos got nine hits off Carter and scored five runs, three of which were earned.
Argos starter Becca Taylor improved to 26-8 on the season despite giving up 11 hits, five earned runs and walking three in a complete game performance. Taylor threw 134 pitches on the afternoon, with 77 coming for strikes.
Castro was perfect at the plate for the Argos, going 4-for-4 including her lead-off homer. Castro also scored three runs and had two RBIs. Sassman and Boltz each had two hits with Boltz picking up two RBIs. Tiona Hill’s game-winning hit capped a 1-for-4 day with three RBIs in the win.
Morgan led the Blazers at the plate as she went 3-for-4 with two home runs, scored three runs and had four RBIs in the loss. Cruthers and Jessica Mohl each recorded two hits for the Blazers.

The Blazers finish the 2017 campaign with a record of 39-19, 21-12 in the Gulf South Conference. The Argos improved to 43-13 and have won three straight as they continue tournament play.
