CAIRO — The mother of a female newborn infant who died in early February has been charged with the death, following a months-long wait for autopsy results.
Amethyst Hindsman turned herself in at the Grady County Detention Center on May 8.
Warrants were issued for Hindsman’s arrest for involuntary manslaughter, concealing a death, and first degree cruelty to children, according to Jamy Steinberg, special agent in charge of Thomasville’s Georgia Bureau of Investigation regional office.
“Medical tests performed showed the child would have survived if it would have received medical care in a timely manner,” Steinberg said.
According to Steinberg, the infant’s death was ruled a homicide by the GBI medical examiner.
The death was reported on Feb. 10. On the same date, the infant was taken to Grady General Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.
The body was transported to the GBI Crime Lab in Macon for an autopsy on Feb. 13.
The Grady County Sheriff’s Office requested GBI assistance with the incident.
