Annual 5K run is Saturday
The annual Jackie Robinson Boys & Girls Club 5K Run/Walk, held in memory of longtime volunteer Marshall Wilcox, will be held on Saturday, May 13. Pre-race registration will start at 7 a.m. with the race starting at 8. The entry fee is $20. There will be awards for the overall male and female in the top three age groups. The race will begin at the Boys & Girls Club and all proceeds will benefit the programs of the club in our in community. Annual food drive Saturday
The Cairo Post Office will be having its annual “Stamp Out Hunger” food drive this Saturday, May 13. Post offices around the country will be collecting food and donating it to local food banks during the annual event. Cairo postal workers will be collecting canned and non-perishable food items to be donated to the Grady County Help Agency. Mail carriers will be putting post cards and collection bags in everyone’s mailbox this week and picking them back up on Saturday, May 13 during their routes. The bags with the food items should be placed by the mail box for pickup.
Road closure relocates dump site
City of Cairo officials remind everyone that because of the temporary closure of 20th Street, NE for repairs, the dump site which is located at the corner of 20th and Joyner Road has been closed. It has been temporarily relocated to the Grady County Livestock Pavilion. The reclamation and repairs of the city street are expected to take several weeks and everyone is reminded to be on notice for detour signs.
Summer Reading 2017 at the library
The theme for the 2017 Summer Reading Program at the Roddenbery Memorial Library is “Build a Better World.” The first event will be Thursday, June 1, with comedian Lee Andrews. The calendar is bursting with many activities for all ages. Some sneak peeks for children include: Storytellers, magicians jugglers and African dancing. Teens can learn “how to adult” with discussions on balancing a checkbook and starting a savings account, job interviewing skills, and proper babysitting guidelines. Adults can learn to sew, can vegetables, make soap and Zumba. Registration is now open and you may sign up by going onto the library’s website at www.rmlibrary.org and click on the link for summer reading. Faith Temple to hold women’s day
Faith Temple Church, 231 Legion Blvd., will be having its annual Women’s Day Sunday, May 21 at 3 p.m. Stephanie Goins from New Visions Church is the guest speaker.
Free services to women offered
The Southwest Health District is offering a program to women ages 40-64 who reside in Georgia that is aimed at reducing cases of breast and cervical cancer. The Grady County Health Department is participating in this program which will provide free great and cervical cancer screening, diagnostic testing and referral for treatment as medically indicated to uninsured or under-insured women with limited income in Georgia. There is no charge for the services for women enrolled in the BCCP program. For more information, contact the Grady County Health Department.
Free health screenings available
The Angels of Grace Community Wellness Center of Cairo is offering free health screenings to residents of Grady County and the surrounding areas. If you would like to know your cholesterol level or want to have your blood pressure checked, you can have these and several other screening performed for free. Free car seats available
The Grady County Health Department is offering free child passenger safety seats to financially eligible families courtesy of a mini-grant from the Georgia Department of Public Health’s Injury Prevention Program. Health department officials are collaborating with the Cairo Fire Department to offer a program to show parents how to correctly install, use and remove child safety seats, with funding provided by the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety. Free child seats will be offered to those who meet the financial requirements and sign up for the program. For more information, contact the Grady County Health Department at 377-2992.
Macedonia M.B. Church to hold revival
Members of Macedonia M.B. Church will be holding their spring revival services through Wednesday at 7 p.m. The guest minister for the revival will be Dr. Willie Baggely of the First Faith Church in Albany. The community is invited to attend these special services.
Banquet to honor retiring teachers
The Grady County Chapter of the Georgia Retired Educators Association will be honoring educators in the local schools who will be retiring this year during a banquet on May 16. All retiring local educators have been invited and are encouraged to attend. The event will be held at the Grady County Senior Center on 17th Avenue, NW. If you plan to attend, RSVP by contacting Jan Westberg at 377-0008 or Twila Bearden at 377-2055. The cost of the meal is $10 per person.
