Thomas County’s oldest continuous congregation at Boston Presbyterian Church observed its 181st anniversary on Sunday, April 30

Anniversary

Thomas County’s oldest continuous congregation observed its 181st anniversary on Sunday, April 30 at the 11 a.m. service. The Boston Presbyterian Church service featured vintage hymns that have been used throughout the history of the church. The congregation was organized in 1836 and was originally located in old Boston, three miles west of the current town site.

In 1861 the railroad came through Thomas County and the church was moved nearer to the railroad in the town of Boston. The church was renamed Bethany Presbyterian Church, which is still the name emblazoned on the stained glass windows at the front of the church. Soon after the turn of the last century the building was moved forward to allow more space for the cemetery. The church was enlarged with the addition of a belfry and stained glass windows. The church records indicate the names of several slave members in the early 1860s.

Eleanor Hallman is the clerk of session and the current minister is the Rev. Donald J. West who has served as minister in charge for the past 28 years. The observance concluded with a traditional Southern meal served in the annex of the church.
