THOMASVILLE — An 8-year-old boy injured Sunday in a golf cart incident died early Thursday at a Florida hospital.
Hampton “Hamp” Nicholson suffered a severe head injury when he ran into the path of a golf cart. He was struck by the vehicle, which knocked him to the ground, according to reports.
The child’s head struck the asphalt street, and he was run over by the golf cart. Four children were traveling in the golf cart. The oldest, age 11, was the operator.
The boy died during predawn hours Thursday at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital, where he was transported after the 1 p.m. Sunday incident on Oak Trace Drive, off Old Monticello Road.
“The death was confirmed at 1:23 this morning,” Sgt. 1st Class Tommy Peeples, Thomasville Post 12 Georgia State Patrol commander, said Thursday morning. Peeples said the Leon County medical examiner’s office confirmed the death.
The youth had been in critical condition since the incident.
Thomasville City School System Superintendent Sabrina Boykins-Everett called for a moment of silence in the child’s memory at the Rose City Readers Early Learning Literacy Summit Thursday morning.
“Our thoughts and prayers certainly go out to the family,” she said.
The boy was a second-grade student at Jerger Elementary School. Boykins-Everett said counselors will be available at the school.
