VSU men beat No. 21 Nebraska-Kearney

The No. 5-ranked Valdosta State men’s tennis team picked up its third consecutive victory after taking down No. 21 Nebraska-Kearney with a dominant 8-1 victory in non-conference action Monday afternoon at the VSU Tennis Courts in Valdosta.
Valdosta State improved to 7-4 overall with the win, while UNK dropped to 6-6 on the season.
In doubles action, Leo Blay and Xavier Pineda set the tone with an 8-3 win against Alvaro Arias at No. 2, before Jordi Mas and Fernando Rivas scored an 8-5 win at No. 3. Nebraska-Kearney’s Georges Wakim and Justin Nguyen put up a fight at No. 1, but in the end, Axel Holm and Eden Peleg took care of business to score a 9-7 win and secure a doubles sweep for Valdosta State.
The Blazers needed just two additional points in singles play to win the match, and Mas and Rivas answered the call at No. 3 and No. 4, respectively. Mas picked up a 6-2, 6-4 win against Mohab El Zanaty and Rivas took down Richards with a 7-5, 6-2 win.
Blay, who currently ranks No. 3 among all singles players at the Division II level, handled Wakim, 6-4, 6-4 at No. 1 to push the Blazers out to a 6-0 advantage, before UNK scored their lone point when Pineda was forced to retire at No. 2 due to injury.
Valdosta State’s final two victories came at No. 6 and No. 5, with respective wins for Davis Stewart and Peleg against Nguyen and Aaron Reekie.
The Valdosta State women team rolled past Nebraska-Kearney with a 7-2 win Monday.
VSU made quick work of UNK in the non-conference matchup, starting with a doubles sweep that began at No. 1 with an 8-2 win for Bea Morales Hernandez and Anke Poncelet against Camryn Parnell and Ana Royo.
Anja Cosovic and Daniela Barta kept the momentum moving in a favorable direction with an 8-3 victory at No. 2, while Laura Ubeda and Estes Widdershoven took down Amanda Alvarez and Emma Neil at No. 3 with an 8-5 win.
In singles play, Morales Hernandez secured a quick win against Sherry Sun at No. 1 with a 6-1, 6-0 win, and Ubeda closed out the match win for the Blazers at No. 3 with a 6-0, 6-1 win against Alvarez.
Sabrina Schmidt and Barta also scored victories at No. 4 and No. 5, with 6-3, 6-3 and 6-3, 6-0 wins against Neil and Parnell, respectively.
Nebraska-Kearney’s only wins came at No. 2, where Royo toppled Cosovic 6-3, 6-0, and Joanna Lario was defeated by Sthefani Rodriguez at No. 6.
The victory pushed VSU to a 7-5 record on the season, while UNK dropped to 6-7 overall.
Valdosta State’s next matchup will take place in Pensacola, Fla., against the North Alabama Lions on Friday at 3 p.m.
