- Ten Baldwin High School students will move on to compete at state literary after being crowned region champions Monday. BHS placed first in seven out of the day's 12 events.
MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. — Students from Baldwin High School traveled to Thomson to compete in the Region 3-AAAA Literary Meet and came away with the school’s first region championship in recent memory by besting four other teams.
Coaches Anna Brock and Amanda Jones took 19 students to compete in 11 out of the day’s 12 events, and left at the end of the day with seven championships with no finishes lower than third.
Brock said in her six years at BHS (second as literary coach) they have never enjoyed this level of success in the region competition.
“Most years we have students win at the region level, but we’ve never had this many win at the region level since I’ve been here,” said Brock. “We’ve never won the competition as a team since I’ve been here.”
The 10 students crowned champions advance to compete against winners across Class 4A’s eight regions in seven events at the state level at Buford High School on Saturday, March 18.
“I’m ecstatic that our students get to showcase their talent on the state level,” Brock said. “I think that we have some insanely talented kids here who have the potential to do really well at that event. … I’m confident in our students’ ability. This being my first time taking students to state I know the caliber of talent that comes out of other schools around the state, so I’m excited to see exactly what kind of competition our students are going to face.”
Brock said that the additional coaching brought along by Jones helped put the team over the top in the musical events.
“Also what helped our team tremendously this year is we had a music coach in addition to me. Amanda Jones, who teaches chorus at Oak Hill, has been coming over and working with our students in the music events and has been coaching them. Having her as an extra coach and being able to take advantage of her professional expertise, I think factored in tremendously with specifically how our music events did.”
