Thursday
• 12:15 p.m. — The Thomasville Rotary Club meets at the Plaza.
• 5:45 p.m. — Early bird Bingo games, sponsored by the Kouncil Club of Thomasville, are at St. Augustine Catholic Church social hall. Regular Bingo sessions begin at 6:45. Prizes awarded and proceeds go to local charities of southwest Georgia.
Friday
• 12:30 p.m. — Thomasville Kiwanis Club meets at the Plaza Restaurant.
Saturday
• 10:30 a.m. to noon South Georgia Genealogy Society meets at the Thomas County Public Library. This will be a special working meeting devoted to sorting and evaluating the many boxes of family histories left to the library by one of its late members. This is a work in progress so members can understand how to organize their own histories. If you have a tablet or laptop computer or alphabet organizer please bring it. Once the histories are sorted and evaluated, they may become part of the histories in the Heritage Room. The activity will be directed by Perida Mitchell, reference manager of the library, and president and vice-president of the society, Vera Hagan and Doris Davies.
• 1 to 5 p.m. — The Thomasville Camellia Show is 1 to 5 p.m., at Trinity Anglican Church, 323 W. Jackson St. It continues from noon to 3 p.m., Sunday. The event is sponsored by Wiregrass Camellia Society.
• 6 to 9 p.m. — Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Lambda Xi Omega chapter, is holding a Sweetheart Dance at MacIntyre Park Middle School. It is for grades K to sixth grade and is $10 per father/daughter and mother/son couples. For tickets, contact any sorority member.
Tuesday
• 6 p.m. — Overeaters Anonymous meets at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in the Guild Room. There are no dues or fees and is open to men and women. Everyone who wants to stop eating compulsively is welcome. For information, call 226-0556 or 221-1202.
• 6:30 p.m. — The Thomasville Orchid Society will meet in the Fellowship Hall of the Dawson Street Methodist Church at 1132 N. Dawson Street, Thomasville. Newcomers and guests are always welcome at the meetings to learn more about these beautiful flowers, their history and tips for their care. Everyone is encouraged to bring any orchids in bloom to show off as well as a snack to share.
Wednesday
• Noon — Thomasville Chapter NSDAR will hold its regular monthly meeting at The Plaza Restaurant. Lunch is $13 per person and no reservations are required. The speaker is Deanna Ramsey, a technical consultant/genealogist from Tallahassee, Florida. She is discussing Best Genealogy Research Tips. The meeting is open to the public.
Miscellaneous
• Women’s Forum of Thomas County scholarship applications are now available. The scholarships recognize and promote academics, leadership and service excellence of female seniors attending Thomasville High School, Thomas County Central High School, Brookwood School, Bishop Hall and Thomas Regional Home School Co-Op. Applications are available through high school guidance counselors. Women’s Forum is a committee of the Thomasville-Thomas County Chamber of Commerce.
• The CASA Kids Program is recruiting volunteers interested in becoming Court Appointed Special Advocates for abused children that enter the juvenile court systems in Thomas and Brooks counties. The next training session begins the first of March. For information, call the CASA office at 225-4338.
• The Jack Hadley Black History Museum officials are celebrating the fourth annual Buffalo Soldiers Heritage Festival and Thomasville-Thomas County Public Safety Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Feb. 18 at the museum. The theme is “Crisis in Black Education.” The guest speaker is retired Col. Nathan Thomas from Melbourne, Florida.
• Students in grades fifth-12th may participate in the annual essay contest sponsored by the Georgia Division, United Daughters of the Confederacy. The title, “Inventions by Confederate Soldiers Used by Today’s Military”, is open to all public, private and home schooled students. The rules and directions are clearly written and specific to each grade level. The essays have to be submitted by March 6, to the John B. Gordon Chapter UDC, Thomasville; c/o M.R. Coons, 203 Summercreek Cove, Thomasville, GA 31792. Division winners in each grade level will be rewarded. Contact M.R. • Gentiva Hospice is sponsoring a bereavement support group on the first Thursday of each month at 10 a.m., at First United Methodist Church, 318 S. Broad St., in Cairo.
• Thomas County Schools, in partnership with the Thomas County Public Library System, has implemented “Bee 4 the Classroom.” This program is designed for parents and children from birth to 3 years old or prior to entering a school setting. Staff members from the school system and the library will be available monthly from 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at each of the county library branches to offer parenting tips for reading to young children, as well as provide food and play time for the little ones. • The Thomas County Republican Party meets the fourth Tuesday of each month at noon at Granddaddy’s Barbecue on Smith Avenue.
• The Thomas County chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness meets the first and third Mondays each month, except for holidays, at 6 p.m. at the Housing and Resource Center, 125 Lester St., Thomasville. On the first Monday of each month, an educational session is held on mental health trends and developments. This meeting is open to families and individuals affected by mental illness. Light refreshments are served. After the speaker, a confidential family and friends support meeting is held for those 18 and older whose loved ones are affected by mental illness. • The Rose City Aeromodelers group has contracted with the City of Thomasville to supervise a model airport at the Thomasville Municipal Airport and a chartered club under the auspices of the Academy of Model Aeronautics.
