Wild Adventures seeking workers
VALDOSTA, Ga. – In preparation for its upcoming season, Wild Adventures Theme Park will host a series of job fairs to fill more than 300 park positions. “We are looking for genuinely friendly and engaging people who want to join a great team, work hard and have a fun summer with our guests,” said Cara Robertson, park human resources manager, in a press release. “For many of our positions, you need to be at least 16 years old and for some positions, the minimum age is 18. We encourage you to apply online at wildadventures.com/jobs before you come to the job fair to expedite the process.” Departments with open positions include admissions, aquatics, attractions, food and beverage, games, merchandise, photography and park services. People participating in the job fairs should dress in business casual attire and some positions may require special skill tests, according to the press release. The job fairs will be held at the park 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Feb. 4 and Feb. 11. Wild Adventures will reopen for the season March 11 with Splash Island opening April 1. Georgia College presents ‘Homage to Don Quixote’ concert
MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. — A 17th-century Spanish novel is the inspiration for the “Homage to Don Quixote” concert at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 6 in the Max Noah Recital Hall on the Georgia College campus. Guest artist and baritone Dr. Matthew Hoch will sing famous vocal works based on Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra’s novel “The Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote of La Mancha.” Songs will include a variety of genre: burlesque, opera, art song, cinema and musical theatre. A professor of voice at Auburn University, Hoch will be accompanied by Georgia College’s Dr. KaJu Lee on piano. Considered one of the first novels in Western literature, Don Quixote’s themes of nature versus fantasy and exploration of truth and justice will shine through songs like Henry Purcell’s “Let the Dreadful Engines of Eternal Will” (1694), Maurice Ravel’s “Don Quichotte à Dulcinée” (1933) and Mitch Leigh’s selections from “Man of La Mancha” (1965). Admission is free but a $10 donations is encouraged. All proceeds benefit music scholarships or the music department through the GCSU Foundation Inc. For more information call 478-445-8289.
Veterans bus seeks volunteer drivers
MOULTRIE, Ga. — The Veterans Bus that helps veterans get to the VA hospital in Lake City, Fla., is calling for reinforcements. The bus leaves Moultrie every Thursday morning and makes pick-ups in Thomasville, Boston and Valdosta before journeying to the hospital where veterans can meet with VA doctors and other medical personnel. It’s operated by the South Georgia Veterans Activities Committee. The committee is seeking volunteers to drive the bus, according to Faye Rowe, a leader of the project since the passing of Col. Hoyt Holland. Rowe said organizers want to set up a schedule where each volunteer drives about once a month, but to do that they need more volunteers. Drivers must have a Commercial Driver’s License. Lafayette Activities Group to hold Valentine’s Day fundraiser
MAYO, Fla. — The Lafayette Activities Group are selling children and adult baskets and roses for Valentine’s Day. The proceeds will go towards this year’s upcoming events. Children baskets are $5, adult baskets are $10, a single rose is $3, half a dozen roses are $15 and a dozen roses are $30. Orders must be placed and paid for by Wednesday. Deliveries are available to the schools and businesses located within the Mayo town limits. South Georgia Strong concert to benefit storm victims
TIFTON, Ga. — The South Georgia Strong benefit concert is set to benefit families impacted by the recent storms. Hosted at the UGA Conference Center on Sunday, Feb. 26, 100 percent of all ticket sales are going directly to those in need in seven counties that are in need. “In times like this we must hold our chins up and stick our helping hands out,” said Austin McAlpin, event organizer. Black History program planned
DALTON, Ga. — The Woman’s Community Club annual Black History Program is Saturday, Feb. 18, at 6 p.m. at the Mack Gaston Community Center in Dalton. The speaker is Chandra D. Fears, who has a master of science degree in social work and a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Tennessee. Organizers invite everyone to attend and celebrate Black History Month. There is no charge. The center is at 218 N. Fredrick St.
