Colquitt County deputies respond to animal complaints

MOULTRIE, Ga. — Some days in the life of a law enforcement officer it seems like everything is going to the dogs. And the cows. And the horses.
On Thursday, neighbors’ complaints in four incidents to which 911 dispatched deputies centered around an animal or group of animals who escaped from the owner’s property.
At 6:21 p.m. Arun Patel reported that a neighbor’s bulldog and pit bull came through his gate and attacked his dog. When Patel put his dog in his house he noticed that the bulldog was bleeding and had retreated into a corner on his deck.
The deputy could not find the neighbors, so he called the Humane Society of Moultrie-Colquitt County, which picked up the injured animal.
About two hours earlier deputies responded to the 1700 block of Tift County Line Road, where Janet Martinez reported that two women took her family’s white poodle. At the time the poodle was taken it was in the yard of another neighbor who does not have a problem with it being there.
After investigating the issue, the officer determined that Martinez’s yard was fenced but the dog managed to escape, and at the time the two women at another nearby residence took it the dog actually was on the public right-of-way and was not in their yard.
At that location, Tasha Green told police they took the dog because it was in their yard and they cut the poodle’s hair “due to its unsightly appearance.” They had returned the animal before the deputy arrived.
The officer noted white dog hair in the yard at Green’s residence.
Police suggested that the Greens handle any future issues with neighbors’ dogs through the Humane Society or sheriff’s office.
At about 4 p.m. the roaming animals were a little larger at the residence of Edna Newsome in the 300 block of Dean Matthews Road.
There the officer saw four black cows in a field behind Newsome’s back yard. She pointed out damage to her fence and yard from prior occasions when the cows went wandering onto her property.
The deputy spoke with the owner of the cows. Newsome allowed him to cut her fence in order to remove the cows.
The officer notified him that he was responsible for the upkeep of fencing.
Thursday morning started off the animal complaints when 911 dispatched a deputy to the intersection of Thompson Road and Bill Smith Road.
There, Ronald Beaty reported that his neighbor’s horses had been grazing in his yard earlier. He told police that the horses have escaped their enclosure on multiple occasions.
