THOMASVILLE — On Saturday, Thomasville’s girls basketball team found itself in prime position to move up the Region 1-2A standings, while the boys looked to continue its undefeated region record.
After a very slow start, the girls ultimately could not complete a late comeback, as they fell to visiting Berrien 56-46 on Saturday night. Thomasville’s boys had a much easier night, cruising by the Rebels in a 64-45 blowout.
Thomasville’s girls headed into the fourth down 13. Tre’Oncia Andrews led the Bulldogs out of the third with a steal and score to start the last 8 minutes of play. Thomasville kept itself within 10 points of tying the game, and almost started a good run when Naomi Toles scored to narrow the lead to 49-42 with 2:55 left.
Zoey Jackson came up with a steal shortly after Toles’ score, but the Bulldogs could not capitalize on that ensuing possession and could not make enough free throws to make another attempt at a comeback.
Thomasville did not help its own cause early on, committing three turnovers in the first few minutes to give the Rebelettes some extra chances. The visitors took full advantage of the Bulldogs’ early mistakes for a 10-0 run to begin the first quarter of play.
Berrien eventually extended its lead to 20-4 with 2:57 left in the first, but Thomasville finally put together its own run, scoring eight consecutive points to narrow the deficit to 24-12 headed into the second quarter.
Jayah McCoggle started the Bulldogs off well in the next period with a 3, but the Rebelettes extended their lead further, with a 31-19 advantage at halftime.
At the beginning of the third, things did not look good or Thomasville, as Berrien continued to score at will, beginning with a 3. Down 46-26 with 1:24 left in the third, Andrews connected on two consecutive shots, including a 3, to help keep the Bulldogs in it at 46-33 headed into the fourth.
Andrews led the Bulldogs with 13 points on the night, with Toles finishing with 10. With the loss, Thomasville fell to 3-4 in its region and 8-14 overall.
The boys set the tone on their very first score of the game, a dunk from Reggie Perry. Berrien responded with a 3 right after, but Thomasville still held a 15-10 lead after one.
By halftime, the Bulldogs had taken full control of the game after Quindarius Thomas executed a steal and score for a 29-12 lead going into the locker room.
Perry, who led the Bulldogs with 27 points on the night, was a force to be reckoned with in the second half. Despite the constant double teams that the Rebels kept implementing, the Arkansas commit dunked over Berrien’s defenders time and time again.
The Bulldogs pulled their starters in the fourth, taking another all-important win, moving to 6-0 in the region and 13-7 overall.
