Homeless count underway
VALDOSTA, Ga. — The homeless in Valdosta and Lowndes County are being counted as part of a statewide effort to assess the homeless population in Georgia. The count happens every two years and is conducted locally by the city’s Neighborhood Development Division and at the state level by the Georgia Department of Community Affairs. In 2015, there were 86 homeless people in Lowndes County and around 14,000 in the state, the official count said. Vanassa Flucas, Valdosta’s Neighborhood Development manager, said the count determines how much funding homeless services and programs will receive. “For any program to succeed, it has to have data,” Flucas said. “Why are you placing funding in certain areas? Why are you taking funding away from certain services? This is another event in an effort to make sure that we have the correct data for our community in reference to our homeless count. “A lot of the services, the different organizations that we have throughout a community and the funding that’s associated with it, hinges on the numbers that we receive from our homeless count.” The city worked with local non-profits and social-service organizations to tally a point-in-time count the night of Jan. 23 but data collection will continue through Jan. 30. The official reports won’t be available until May or June, Flucas said. Volunteers are needed to help with the count, and residents can also participate by donating items for care packages for the homeless. For more information, contact Neighborhood Development, (229) 671-3617.
