THOMASVILLE — Brookwood School and Thomas County School System schools went into soft lockdowns midmorning Tuesday after shots were heard in an area near Brookwood.

“We have not located anything,” Capt. Steven Jones, Thomas County Sheriff’s Office public information officer, said.

Police and deputies responded to the school to ensure safety of the school, as well as locate the shots, Jones said.

The shots might have been fired by a hunter, Jones added.

Dr. Dusty Kornegay, county school superintendent, said, “We were just securing our schools until we knew what was going on.”

In a soft lockdown, students are taken into buildings and exterior doors are locked. In a hard lockdown, doors are locked, and students are hidden so they cannot be seen by an intruder, Kornegay explained.
