Police Chief Frank Lang requested the investigation on Thursday, the GBI said in a news release on Friday afternoon.

“Allegations were made that on Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2017, Officer Smith assaulted an individual who was restrained after being taken into custody,” the agency said.

Smith was charged with violation of oath of office and assault under color of office, both felony charges. He was booked into Colquitt County Jail after his arrest.

The GBI said that the investigation is not completed and requests that anyone with information to contact its Thomasville office at (229) 225-4090, or the Moultrie police Criminal Investigation Division at (229) 890-5500.

Smith had recently returned to work in Moultrie after working at the Doerun Police Department for several years.
