DALTON, Ga. — One of this area’s best signal callers will get the chance to compete against some of the top junior football players in the state this week.
Northwest Whitfield High School quarterback Luke Shiflett is in Atlanta prepping for the Georgia Junior Bowl presented by the Rising Seniors Foundation. Shiflett arrived at the event on Monday and will go through four days of instruction and practice before playing in the game Friday at 6 p.m.
The game is at Mercer University’s Five-Star Stadium in Macon and will be televised on ESPN3, the network’s streaming service.
There are 48 players listed on each roster, including three quarterbacks. Shiflett is on Team Commitment along with fellow quarterbacks Justin Fields from Harrison and Gunnar Watson from Taylor County. The only other players to accept an invitation from northwest Georgia are Jamarcus Chatman and Ja’Quoun Griffin from Rome and Bucky Williams, an offensive lineman from Ringgold.
Shiflett was recently rated as the No. 8 quarterback in the state for the class of 2018 by recruitgeorgia.com. He has a three-star rating by the recruiting service 247sports.com and is listed as the No. 57 prospect in the state overall for his class. Seven of the top 20 prospects in the state, according to 247sports, are participating in this week’s junior bowl.
Shiflett currently holds four scholarship offers, including two from FBS schools Georgia Southern and Troy. He was named to The Daily Citizen’s All-Area team for 2016 last week after throwing for 2,334 yards and rushing for another 710 yards with 34 total touchdowns.
