Thomasville basketball sweeps Seminole County

THOMASVILLE — The first day of Holiday Hoopfest turned out to be a successful one for the event’s hosts.
Both playing Seminole County, Thomasville’s teams came away with a sweep over the visiting Indians, with the girls riding a strong second quarter for a 65-33 victory, while the boys overcame a late rally by the visitors to complete a 53-47 win on Monday night.
The girls will play Worth on the second day of competition on Tuesday, with the tip coming at 7:00 p.m. The boys will play in the second round of the winner’s bracket, taking on Coffee at 8:30.
After Jayah McCoggle and Osjha Dent tied the game at 8 with 1:15 left in the first, Thomasville’s girls went into the second quarter with a slim 12-10 lead. In the second, The Bulldogs took control for good, with Zoey Jackson scoring 9 points in the period to help her team outscore Seminole 22-8, leading to a 34-18 lead at halftime.
The Bulldogs iced the game late in the fourth, scoring on five straight possessions. Jackson and Dent led Thomasville with 11 points each.
The boys game began close and stayed that way throughout. After taking a 13-8 lead after the first quarter, Thomasville extended it to 23-17 at the half, with Reggie Perry and Vonterius Woolbright leading the team with 6 and 5 points at that mark, respectively.
However, in the third, Seminole began to claw back, eventually tying the game at 30 midway through the third, and taking the lead with a Trayvon Sims score. The lead exchanged hands three more times in the third before Thomasville took the lead for the last time at 36-34. Perry and Jordan Powell contributed to a Bulldog run with back-to-back scores with a steal, eventually taking the close win.
Perry finished with 23 points. Quindarius Thomas finished second in points with nine.
