DALTON, Ga. — They could have spent their last day at school before the Christmas break having a party. But second- and fourth-graders at Christian Heritage School instead did something they say was much more fun. They put together 20 Christmas bags and custom-made Christmas cards for families and individuals at City of Refuge, which serves the homeless and others in need in Dalton.
“It’s very cool that we are able to help other people,” said fourth-grader Emma Lester.
Henry Stanley, another fourth-grader, said he loves to help other people.
“I feel really great about what we are doing,” he said. “I hope that they know we want to help them.”
On Friday morning, the students were busily stuffing the bags with socks, deodorant, toothpaste, toothbrushes and other essentials as well as snacks and blankets. They also placed a hand-made Christmas card in each bag.
Fourth-grade teacher Cassie Knight said she was glad this is how the students chose to spend their time.
“They could have had a party, but this was important to them,” she said.
Cynthia Stanley, a class parent, said all the items in the bags had been donated by the parents of the students who sent the items rather than snacks or gifts for a class party.
“The kids are really enjoying this. They said it is the best party ever,” Stanley said.
Second-grade teacher Diane Hester said she was very proud of the students.
“The kids are so excited about doing this, and they are really happy that they’ll be helping others,” she said.
Jennifer Nicholson, of City of Refuge, said she was excited when she learned what the students wanted to do.
“We depend on the community. We can’t do what we do without their support,” she said. “These bags will help the people we serve, and it’s good to know that these children are learning at such a young age the value of giving.”
