Gainey reunion Saturday
The descendants of Tonsil Maxwell Gainey and Robert Heywood Gainey will be having their annual family reunion this Saturday at the Reno Community Center. A picnic lunch will be served at noon and all relatives and friends are invited to bring their favorite covered dish and share the day to reminisce and enjoy fellowship.

Account set up for cancer patient
There has been a benefit account established at United National Bank of Grady County for Lisa Ezell, who has been diagnosed with renal cell carcinoma kidney cancer. She is currently recovering from surgery and all donations to the account will go toward medical and monthly expenses while she is out of work. Artisan Fair Oct. 8
The Elevate Artisan
Fair, An Intentional Gathering of Artistic Flair, will be coming to Grady County on Oct. 8 at Summerhill Farms, which is located just south of Graco Fertilizer on the Alton Hall Road in Cairo. The event will feature over 30 local artisans who produce everything from handmade wreaths and ceramics to locally-made wines and products from locally-produced honey. There will be a $3 entrance fee per car with 4-Hers on hand to assist with parking. For more information, call Della Lovett at 377-3116.
Camp Heal is Oct. 29

Hospice of Southwest Georgia will be sponsoring Camp Heal, an annual day camp for children who are dealing with the death of a loved one, on Oct. 29 from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Camp Piney Woods in Thomasville. The free camp is for children ages 6-17 and offers educational discussions on grief and bereavement, an informal memorial service and other activities. All campers must pre-register by Oct. 15 and volunteers by Sept. 30 by calling 800-290-6567.
Toastmasters seeks members
People from this area who would like to learn to be more confident and speak better in public are encouraged to join the local Toastmasters Club, which meets every Monday night from 6:30-7:30 p.m. in Building A, Room 122 at Southwest Regional Technical College. By regularly giving speeches, gaining feedback, leading teams and guiding others to achieve their goals in a supportive atmosphere, leaders emerge from the Toastmasters program and anyone who is interested in developing these type of leadership skills is encouraged to join the group. Pastor appreciation program Sunday
The members of New Generations by Faith Ministry will be having a Pastor Appreciation Day at 3 p.m., on Sunday. Elder Tommy Burch has been in ministry for over 30 years and is the founding pastor of New Generation by Faith Ministry for nine years. The guest speaker for the service will be the Rev. Henry Flowers III and a dinner on the grounds will be served following the special service.
Ebenezer A.M.E. to hold program
Members of Ebenezer A.M.E. Church will celebrate their Lay Program at 3 p.m., Sunday. The guest speaker is the Rev. Timothy Sands of St. Peter A.M.E. Church in Camilla. The Rev. Dr. Gloria Walden and the entire congregation invite everyone to attend this special program.
Freedom banquet Saturday
Members of the Grady County Chapter of the NAACP will hold their annual Freedom Fund Banquet on Saturday beginning at 7 p.m. at the Grady Senior Center. The guest speaker is Judge Gregory Williams. Tickets for the banquet are $20 each and may be purchased by calling 224-1200 or 397-7073.
Doughnut fundraiser Oct. 14
The Grady County School District soccer booster club, Friends of Soccer, is sponsoring a doughnut fundraiser at 7:30 a.m., on Oct. 14 outside the CTAE building at Cairo High School. Walk with a Dog Doc Oct. 1
Second Chance Animal Rescue (S.C.A.R.) will benefit from the “Walk With a Dog Doc” event that will be coming to Davis Park from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Oct. 1. The staff of Animal Medical Center of Cairo is sponsoring the event and Dr. Janet Ackerman will be on hand to walk with the attendees and answer questions about their animal’s health during the event. There will also be free activities such as obedience and agility demonstrations with questions answered for dog owners who need help with dog problems. Participants who walk at least one mile will be a free goodie bag and will be eligible for a raffle for a deluxe goodie bag. In addition, there will be chicken pilau available and served for $7 per plate. S.C.A.R., a local organization which helps make dogs and cats available for adoption, will be using the proceeds to help fund a new facility for Grady County’s unwanted animal population.
