QUITMAN, Ga. — Writing a script based on Spook Bridge in Brooks County, filmmakers Roy Kirkland and Doug Sebastian could have selected several legends as the basis for the plot of the planned horror movie.
Instead, the script will touch upon legends surrounding the highway bridge that has been closed for several decades but will draw mostly upon a fictional story stretching from the South of 1916 to the early and mid-20th century when the span was first built and used to now.
One things for certain. Kirkland and Sebastian plan to film at Spook Bridge, an abandoned bridge that has long been a tempting target for trespassers and the curious.
Brooks County officials have given the filmmakers permission to film at the bridge and other locations in Quitman and the county during the summer, Kirkland said.
The filmmakers said they have been welcomed to Quitman which is a change from official responses in other South Georgia areas. Sebastian and Kirkland, both of Valdosta, said the region is missing out on the lucrative film industry that has made a home in Atlanta and other North Georgia communities.
Through RKDS Entertainment & Media, Kirkland and Sebastian have filmed movies locally, including “Grandma’s Blessings,” “Crazed,” and the yet unreleased “Battle of the Cursed: The Two Kings.” They also produce the Internet program, “The Oh, Roy Show!”
For “Spook Bridge,” the filmmakers said they are reaching out to the Georgia Film Hotline. They have tapped the involvement of graduates from area film school programs. Jeremy Johnson is slated to serve as director of photography for the film. Matt Greenwell is the production assistant. Kirkland wrote the script and is the movie’s producer. Sebastian is the director.
Johnson and Greenwell said they would like to work with movies in South Georgia, using their degrees of specialty close to home, but have been discouraged by the region’s seeming lack of interest in attracting the film industry here.
They said they look forward to spending the summer months filming “Spook Bridge.”
Principal filming is scheduled to begin June 16 in Brooks County.
Next week, RKDS hosts a casting call, 2-6 p.m., May 26, at the Brooks County Library, Kirkland said.
“Our characters are South Georgia characters,” Kirkland said. “So we want South Georgia actors.”
For the casting call, Kirkland said he wants experienced actors. He is also looking for extras to film the courthouse scenes scheduled to run from June 16-19. The courthouse scene is set in 1916 and he asks people wishing to participate to arrive wearing clothing that would seem appropriate for a Southern agricultural community in the early 20th century. People do not have to wear period clothing for the casting call.
