A Valdosta Police Department officer observed via the citywide camera system what appeared to be a drug transaction at Ora Lee West on Jane Street, said VPD Capt. Kari Williams.

A man described as a “seller” appeared to sell marijuana to a person on a bicycle, according to police.

Officers pursued the person on the bicycle and arrested him.

Police approached the seller’s car. A police dog alerted on the vehicle. A woman arrived and said the car belonged to her, authorities said.

Meanwhile, the seller opened the door, grabbed a bag of marijuana and threw it under the car, reports indicated. Someone grabbed the bag of marijuana and ran away.

“A crowd of between 15-20 people then surrounded the two officers in an attempt to interfere with the arrest of (the seller),” according to police reports. “Approximately eight to 10 subjects then began attempting to assist (the seller) by attempting to push one of the car doors shut to prevent the officers from taking (him) into custody.”

Police ordered the crowd to stand back. Additional officers responded to the scene.

The incident was recorded by the citywide camera system and officers’ body-worn cameras. Videos are being reviewed. Additional arrests may be made in the case, police said.

“The police department has received numerous complaints over the past several months of illegal drug sales in the area of Troup Street and East Jane Street,” Valdosta Police Chief Brian Childress said in a statement. “This incident confirms information which the department received. We will not tolerate this nonsense going on in our city and everyone who interfered with the officers will be arrested.”
