OUR OPINION: Trump’s ‘whine glass’ overflows

If petulance was a martial art, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump would have a black belt in it. He is a master at blaming others for his mistakes, setbacks and ignorance.

Trump’s “whine” glass overflowed during a Fox News interview on Monday.

“The system is rigged. It’s crooked,” Trump said.

Trump was referring to getting shut out in Saturday’s battle for Colorado’s delegates to the Republican National Convention. Ted Cruz won 30 and will likely pick up the remaining seven that are unpledged at this time.

“The people out there are going crazy, in the Denver area and Colorado itself, and they’re going absolutely crazy because they weren’t given a vote,” Trump griped. “This was given by the politicians. It’s a crooked deal.”

Trump’s complaint has absolutely no merit. Colorado Republicans set up their own election system, which is perfectly within their rights according to national party rules.

In August of last year when the GOP field featured nearly 20 candidates and before a single vote had been cast anywhere in the nation, Colorado opted against conducting a traditional primary or caucus election. They developed a process that selects delegates through a series of meetings at the precinct and congressional district levels, then culminating with a state convention. There is nothing untoward or unfair about it.

We believe it is necessary to point out Trump’s hypocrisy in this matter. Did he complain last month when he won 100 percent of Florida’s 99 delegates even though he received just 45 percent of the vote? If he was consistent, he would consider that unfair.

Simply put, Trump got thumped in Colorado because Cruz understood the rules in the state and he didn’t. That is disturbing considering that Trump’s candidacy is built on his being organized and on top of things.
