- Thomas County Central’s Palmer Nesmith pivots to take a shot against Dougherty Tuesday at the Thomas County Middle School soccer field.
The Thomas County Central girls soccer team had to wait a bit to start its game Tuesday night against Dougherty, but didn’t miss a beat in putting up another 10-0 mercy-rule shortened victory.
After nearly an hour delay while waiting for Dougherty to arrive, the Yellow Jackets (9-5, 8-0 Region 1-AAAA) took a 6-0 lead by halftime.
“We came out really flat, but we got our act together and ended up connecting with one another,” head coach Kristy Peeples said. “We were able to play three in the back and push as many forwards up as possible to create more options.”
They came out firing harder in the second half to put the game away. Senior Brittney Teasley did so 12 minutes in before she and her four senior teammates — Angie Gutierrez, Allison Eason, Lizzie Alford and goalkeeper Abby Hurst — were honored between games.
Jade Guyton led the Jackets with six goals in the game. Cara Eaton scored one and Palmer Nesmith also scored one.
The Jackets play a rained-out makeup game against Americus-Sumter at home Thursday. And on Tuesday they’ll play the rest of a shortened game against Bainbridge. (6-5-1, 5-5-1).
The game was called with 31 minutes even on the clock and the Jackets leading, 2-0. Peeples said the game will continue from that point.
