OUR OPINION: Police made right moves

Monday morning quarterbacking is not limited to football. Police officers are subjected to plenty of second-guessing, too.

Such was the case here in recent days following a rash of lewd incidents at Cherokee Park. People pilloried the Thomasville Police Department on social media, questioning its effectiveness since no one had been caught. Most asked the following questions:

— Why don’t the police patrol the park in their cars?

— Why don’t the police have uniformed officers on foot in the park?

— Why don’t the police have some undercover officers in the park?

— Why don’t the police install cameras in the park?

As it turns out, the police were doing all these things and they were instrumental in leading to the arrest of Keith Howard Tuesday afternoon. He was charged with two counts of child molestation in reference to an incident reported Sunday.

We commend the Thomasville Police Department for its work on this case and we agree wholly with what it posted on Facebook page before Howard’s arrest:

We know there have been some concerns about recent events reported at Cherokee Lake. We would like to take a moment to address those concerns. Your safety and security at the park is a top priority for us and we have boosted patrol (via car and on foot) to monitor activity there.

First, we believe them to be isolated incidents and the actions of one individual whom we are hard at work to catch.

Second, If you notice ANYTHING out of the ordinary or anything that is of concern to you, please dial 911 and report it immediately before calling family members or friends. Be a good witness by reporting any available details, clothing description, direction of travel, etc. Any delay in reporting decreases the chances we can apprehend whoever is responsible for the illegal acts out there.

As always, if you see something, please say something!

We encourage park users to follow the department’s advice. Its ability to solve cases like these depends on witness accounts. Please be aware of your surroundings.

This city is blessed to have a police department that is accredited by the nation’s top law enforcement commission. It truly cares about the citizens it serves and works diligently to maintain public safety.

We have no doubt the park will soon return to the tranquil place people love to frequent.
