Doris Gwaltney Burgess
Services for Doris Gwaltney Burgess, 93, of Cairo, are at 2 p.m., Tuesday, March 15, 2016, at Capel Baptist Church, Cairo. The Rev. Stan Godwin and Rev. Robert Crapps will officiate. Interment will be in Capel Baptist Church Cemetery, Cairo. Active pallbearers will be Robbie Gwaltney, Chris Gwaltney, Benji Gwaltney, Chance Gwaltney, Don Gwaltney, Rich Gwaltney, Joey Knight and Josh Faircloth. Mrs. Burgess passed away at her home in Grady County, Georgia, on Sunday, March 13, 2016. Mrs. Burgess was born on September 18, 1922, in Cairo, to the late Thomas Lee Hester and Dolly Brock Hester. On November 4, 1945, she married Donald Van Gwaltney, who preceded her in death on January 22, 1976. On July 11, 1980, she married James Turner Burgess, who preceded her in death on May 9, 1999. She retired from the Grady County Board of Education as a teacher’s aide. She was a member of Capel Baptist Church and the WMU of Capel Baptist Church. Survivors include children, Sandra Johnson (Lee) of Whigham, Bobby Gwaltney (Linda) of Cairo, Tommy Gwaltney (Frances) of Cumming, Mickey Gwaltney (Susan) of Hoschton, Fran Faircloth (Jack) of Cairo; grandchildren, Joey Knight of Whigham, Donna Scott of Whigham, Robbie Gwaltney of Atlanta, Chris Gwaltney (Loreal) of Fleming Island, Florida, Benji Gwaltney (Selina) of Cairo, Chance Gwaltney (Erika) of Crawfordville, Florida, Don Gwaltney (Sharon) of Roswell, Rich Gwaltney (Kerry) of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, Jeremy Gwaltney (Michelle) of McDonough, Tiffany Muklevicz (Darren) of Gainesville, Dolly Solomon (Mark) of Tallahassee, Florida, Hope Weeks (Ronnie Jr.) of Hoschton, Josh Faircloth (Vanessa) of Cairo, Jade Mitchell (Jeff) of Tallahassee, Florida; 20 great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren; and a brother, James Hester (Jane) of Cleveland, GA. She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Donald Van Gwaltney, James T. Burgess; son, Danny Ray Gwaltney; granddaughter, Kelly Cheri Gwaltney; brothers, Leo Hester, Frances Hester; and sister, Lillian Reeves.
