MOULTRIE — The suspect in a slaying in the early hours of March 1 has previous convictions on drug and theft charges and an unresolved case involving marijuana and a weapon, but no history of violent crime.
Kalvin Tyrone Suggs was arrested on Thursday evening and charged in the slaying of Tony Harrison, 22.
Harrison was shot in the Sunset Plaza parking lot outside a nightclub at about 1:30 a.m. The two men apparently exchanged gunfire. Several cars were struck by bullets but no bystanders were injured during the shootout.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation announced on Friday that Suggs, 26, 603 First St. S.E., had been taken into custody and charged with felony murder and aggravated assault. The agency said in a news release that the two men apparently were involved in an altercation that led to the shooting.
At the time of his arrest Suggs had charges pending from an April 2014 arrest on charges of possession of marijuana with intent to distribute and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.
Suggs was sentenced in April 2010 to a three-year prison term on a conviction for possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, according to the Georgia Department of Corrections. He served two and a half years and was released in February 2013.
He also was sentenced in a 2007 case on charges of possession of cocaine and theft by receiving stolen property.
Harrison’s is the second fatal shooting in the county this year, with both of those occurring in Moultrie.
The body of 36-year-old Terrell Eugene Hawkins was found on the night of Jan. 6 inside a 618 Third Ave. S.E. residence. He was shot multiple times and a second victim, Alexis Davis, 26, was shot and survived.
Ponikarski “P.K.” Green, 32, who was accused of shooting Hawkins in a 2006 incident, has been charged with murder in Hawkins’ slaying and with aggravated assault in connection with the shooting of Davis.
Green and another man were charged in the earlier incident in which Hawkins was shot and Eddie Sanchez Martin was fatally wounded at Shy Manor Apartments in Northwest Moultrie, but prosecutors dropped charges against them because the key witness was himself found slain a little more than a year later.
