LOS ANGELES — Dozens of passengers fled from a terminal at Los Angeles International Airport on Monday morning as police pursued and arrested a motorist who apparently tried to kill himself in his car, authorities said.

A false announcement over an LAX loudspeaker in Terminal 2 described the incident as a man with a gun. That sent screened passengers running from the terminal onto the airfield.

The incident began about 9 a.m. PST when officers responded to a possible suicide attempt outside the Japan Cargo building immediately south of LAX.

Authorities said police tried to help the person, but he was uncooperative and fled in his car.

Officers chased him onto airport roads, where he finally stopped in front of Terminal 2 on the upper roadway of the departures level. Police took him into custody.

Los Angeles firefighters transported the person to a local hospital for evaluation and treatment. His identity was not released.

The passengers that fled onto the tarmac were monitored, police said, and moved back into the terminal area so they could make their flights.

Operations in the terminal area had returned to normal by late morning, authorities said.
