Services for Robert L. Roberson at 3 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 30, 2014 at Ochlocknee Baptist Church. Interment will follow in the Ochlocknee City Cemetery. Pallbearers are A.J. Roberson, Zeb Taylor, Caleb Taylor, Chad Griner, Ronnie Herring and Robert Garrison. Honorary pallbearers are The American Legion members along with Billy Joe Lewis, Carlton Roberson, Sonja Dollar, Ron Vaughn, L.D. Johnson and Bill Benton. Mr. Roberson died Tuesday, Oct. 28 at Archbold Medical Center. He was born in Boston, Ga., on Sept. 18, 1923 and was the son of Carl Robert Roberson and Ruth Busbee Roberson. He moved to Ochlocknee when was three years old and has lived there his entire life. He graduated from Ochlocknee High School in 1940 and attended several schools studying aircraft radio operation. After graduation from the school in Reno, Nevada, he joined the Army Air Corps in March 1943 and was assigned to the Air Transport Command1342 AAF Base in China. He served in the China-Burma-India Theater of World War II. He was a radio operator in the C-47 and flew several thousand hours delivering supplies to the Chinese Army. He received several medals during his service time. He was discharged on January 7, 1946 and returned home to work in the U.S. Post office where he was appointed postmaster in 1954 and served until he retired in 1978. He took up a second career and trained as a piano tuner until 1991. He was a member of Ochlocknee Baptist Church for 78 years having served as a deacon for 60 years. He served also as the President of Senior Citizens Group (55 Alive) and led the Baptist Training Union. He was always interested in keeping the church grounds clean and mowed; and contributed much time and effort in building tables and bookcases for many of the Sunday School rooms at the church. Hardly a room there that does not have items of his carpentry skills. Mr. Roberson was also a member of the American Legion Post for 64 years and was the oldest member in the Ochlocknee Post. He was also a member of NARFE (National Association of Retired Federal Employees). He was married to Myrtle Roberson of Ochlocknee on October 26, 1947 and they had 67 years together. He is survived by his wife, Myrtle, and three sons, Bob Roberson (Sharon) of Moultrie, Richard and Roger Roberson of Ochlocknee; five grandchildren, Sarah Roberson of Tifton, A.J. Roberson (fiancé Mandy Powell) of Thomasville, Kristen Griner (Chad) of Moultrie, Zeb Taylor of Moultrie, Caleb Taylor of Moultrie; and four great-grandchildren, Morgan Griner, Caitlin Griner, Rebekah Taylor and Camden Taylor. He is also survived by one sister, Lois Wood of Vidalia; and several nieces and nephews.
