Rita Virginia Kirkland Davis
Graveside services for Rita Virginia Kirkland Davis are at 11 a.m., Saturday, July 8, 2006, at Laurel Hill Cemetery on Mississippi Street. The Rev. Bob Dixon and the Rev. Weyman Cleveland will officiate. Mrs. Davis died Thursday, July 6 at Camellia Gardens of Life Care in Thomasville. Born Feb. 22, 1923, in Coffee County, she was a daughter of the late Richard “Geech” Clemmons Kirkland and Lonni Kirkland. On Jan. 12, 1946, in Douglas, she married John Watson Davis who survives. She was a member of Thomasville First United Methodist Church where she was an active member of the Lawson Neel Sunday School Class. She was a former member of Dawson Street United Methodist Church. She graduated from Orange Memorial Nursing School in Orlando, Fla. She worked as a registered nurse and retired in 1984 from Archbold Memorial Hospital. Survivors include her husband, J. Watson Davis of Thomasville; two sons, Dr. Richard Davis of Tallahassee, Fla., Timothy Lamar Davis of Metcalfe; a sister, Rose Corbitt of Forest Park; two granddaughters, Jessica Leigh Davis of Tallahassee, Nancy Virginia Davis of Metcalfe; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by sisters, Sarah King, Billie Haskins and Frances Davis. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 1512-1 Gillionville Rd., Albany, Ga. 31707 or to First United Methodist Church, 425 N. Broad St., Thomasville, Ga. 31792. Adam John Hopkins Sr.
Services for Adam John Hopkins Sr. (Bill Muhammed), 75, 3632 Hall Rd., Thomasville, are at 11 a.m., Saturday, July 8, 2006, at Springhill Missionary Baptist Church, 4293 Hall Rd., Thomasville. The Rev. Kenneth L. Boyd Sr., pastor, and the Rev. E.H. Hopkins, officiating and interment is in Springhill Cemetery. Active pallbearers are his nephews. Mr. Hopkins died July 4 at Archbold Hospital. Born March 1, 1931, in Thomas County, he was a son of the late Frank Thompson and Rossie B. Hopkins. He was married to Annie Bell Hopkins who preceded him in death. He attended Springhill Community School, member of Springhill Missionary Baptist Church and inactive member of Masonic Florida Chapter. He retired from Balfour Lumber Company and a lifetime resident of Thomasville. Survivors include a daughter, Mary H. Gardenhire of Augusta; sons, Adam John Hopkins II, George Hopkins both of Thomasville; daughter, Carolyn Wiggins of Augusta; sons, Ricky Hopkins, Samuel Hopkins both of Thomasville; sister, Mary Mickens of Thomasville; brothers, the Rev. Harold Hopkins of Akron, Ohio, Bradley Thompson of Miami, Fla.; granddaughter, Latwanda Gardenhire of Augusta; grandson, Cedrick Gardenhire of Augusta; granddaughter, Miesha Gardenhire of Augusta; grandson, Canton Gardenhire of Augusta; granddaughters, Chene Gbemeh, Tangela Barrie both of Atlanta, Tunisha Hopkins of Tampa, Fla.; grandson, A.J. Hopkins III of Thomasville; granddaughter, Yolanda Hunter of Augusta; grandson, Dontrailus Hobbs of Augusta; granddaughters, Montera Wiggins of Augusta, Nanya Hopkins of Thomasville; special companion, Mary Mitchell of Thomasville; nine great-grandchildren; several sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law; and numerous other relatives and friends who will dearly miss his kind and giving heart, sense of humor and most of all his love. The viewing is from 1:30 p.m. until with a wake from 7 to 8 p.m., today at the funeral home and from 9:30 a.m., until the services Saturday at the church. O.A. Lott Jr.
Services for O.A. Lott Jr., 60, Meigs, are at 3 p.m., Sunday, July 9, 2006, at Rose Hill Baptist Church. The Rev. Ralph Harrell and the Rev. Tom Wright will officiate and interment is in Rose Hill Cemetery. Active pallbearers are nephews — Ben Walker, Tim Morris, Phillip Smith, Mark Lott, Tom Morris and Ricky Lott. Honorary pallbearers are his brother and brothers-in-law. Mr. Lott died July 5 at his residence. Born Jan. 31, 1946, in Coffee County, he was a son of the late Vera Vickers Lott and Oliver A. Lott Sr. He was meat market manager at Piggly Wiggly and owner of Lott Lawn Care. Survivors include his wife, Becky Harrell Lott of Meigs; sons, Keith Lott of Columbus, Tom Wright of Greenville, Miss., Anthony Wright of Atlanta; daughter, Kristi Wadsworth of Dothan, Ala.; a brother, Danny Lott of Ambrose; sisters, Eunice Morris of Pearson, Connie Carver of Douglas, Claryce Batten of Douglas, Sandra Batten of Ambrose; six grandchildren, Erin Lott, Austin Lott, Hannah Grace Lott of Columbus, Megan Lott, Mallory Lott and McKenzie Lott of Dothan. Rosa Lee McDuffie
Services for Rosa Lee McDuffie, Cairo, are at 11 a.m., Saturday, July 8, 2006, at Beulah Missionary Baptist Church. The Rev. Delise Cox, pastor officiating, and interment is in Crestview Cemetery. Active pallbearers are grandsons. Mrs. McDuffie died July 3 in Atlanta. Born in Grady County, she was a daughter of the late Rebecca and Will McDuffie. She was married to Coy McDuffie who preceded her in death on Sept. 9, 1984. She attended Grady County public schools and a member of Beulah Missionary Baptist Church. Survivors include sons, Willie McDuffie, Freddie McDuffie (Juanita) all of Cairo, Henry McDuffie (Ozella), James McDuffie (Carolyn) all of Washington, D.C., Johnny McDuffie (Georgia) of Boulevard Heights, Md.; daughters, Betty Shirly (George Sr.) of Fort Washington, Md., Barbara Taylor of Cairo; daughter-in-law, Shirley McDuffie of Meigs; special granddaughter, Margaret Guthrie (Allan) of Tallahassee, Fla.; 28 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; a sister, Gladys Weatherspoon; brother, Albert Walker; sister-in-law, Pearl Kelly; special neice, Ruby Guyton who was like her sister; devoted caregiver, Mary Riles; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. — Weston’s Funeral Home
Sara James Shipp
A memorial service for Sara James Shipp, 74, is at 11 a.m., Saturday, July 8, 2006, at All Saints’ Episcopal Church in Thomasville. Mrs. Shipp, a longtime Thomasville school teacher and wife of the late Dr. C. Carlton Shipp, died at her home in Thomasville on July 5. She was born in Argyle, as the youngest of seven children to tobacco farmer Richard Crum James and his wife, Estella Barber James. She had six older brothers. She graduated from the Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville. Upon graduating, she was a teacher at Homerville High School, prior marrying Dr. Shipp and moving to Thomasville. She later taught in the Thomasville City School system for over 20 years. Mrs. Shipp was a founding parishioner of All Saints’ Episcopal Church. She was a member of the choir and the Episcopal Church Women. A devoted member, she was always there to support the fall bazaar. Survivors include her daughter, Mary Claire Shipp Murphy of Alexandria, Va.; son, Trey Shipp of Atlanta; a brother, Lamartine James of Madison, Fla.; and four grandchildren. — Whiddon-Shiver Funeral Home
