Mrs. Thomas S. (Polly) Horne

Services for Mrs. Thomas S. (Polly) Horne, 97, of 225 Tuxedo Drive, a retired school teacher, are at 11 a.m., Thursday, June 4, 2009, at First Baptist Church, where she was a member. The Rev. Dr. Milton C. Gardner, pastor emeritus, will officiate. The family will receive visitors immediately following the service in the First Baptist Church Vistors Center. She was born Jan. 8, 1912, in Pinetta, Fla., to Marcus Henry Parrish and Ladelle Moseley Parrish. The family moved to Pavo when she was six and to Metcalfe at age 14. She was married on Dec. 1, 1934, in Thomasville to Thomas Sam Horne of Metcalfe, and in 1954 they established Tom Horne Supply Company, where she was a bookkeeper for many years. She was a 1929 graduate of Thomasville High School and attended the-then Georgia State Women’s College at Valdosta. During the 1930s-Depression years she taught in Georgia schools at Cadwell, Screven and Remerton. In 1964, after her children were grown, she returned to Valdosta State College and completed work for her degree. She taught in Thomasville public schools for 15 years. She also worked for three years at the Thomas County Department of Family and Children’s Services. She enjoyed being a member of the Briarcliff Garden C lub and was involved with the Thomasville Rose Show and camellia shows for many years. She also served as a Pink Lady at Archbold Memorial Hospital. She was preceded in death by her husband on March 17, 1971; her son, Thomas Joe Horne, on Jan. 27, 2009; a brother, Leslie (Sue) Parrish of Madison, Ga.; and four sisters, Mrs. Leslie (Mattie) Johnson of Jacksonville, Fla., Mrs. Corbett (Janie) Alderman, Valdosta, Mrs. J.E. (Myrneth) Leger of Ocilla, Ga., and Mrs. Walter (Helen Dale) Cottingham of Greenville, S.C. Surviving are her daughter, Mrs. Jack (Janis Horne) Kelly and daughter-in-law, Mrs. Joe (Nancy McCall) Horne. Also surviving are her grandchildren, John and Lori Kelly of Lilburn, Ga.; Kathryn and Allen Upton and Robert and Dianna Kelly, all of Thomasville, Carole Kelly Newbern of Valdosta, Justin and Rosemary Horne Coleman, Hahira; and Robert and Polly Horne Hopkins of College Park, Ga.; and great-grandchildren Amanda, Jennifer, Melissa, Nathan and Mattison Kelly, Caitlin Collier, Caroline Upton, Kelly and Thomas Newbern, Morgan and Sommers Coleman, and Peyton, Ramsey and Lily Hopkins; a brother-in-law, Olin Horne Jr. and (Lou) of Metcalfe; sisters-in-law, Janet Horne McLendon of Thomasville, Harriet Horne Pearce of San Antonio, Texas; and many nieces and nephews.
