Services for Ned Smith, Sr., 84, of Jacksonville will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, August 25, 2012 at First Unity Missionary Baptist Church. Rev. Charlie Ross, Pastor and officiating services with interment to follow at Peaceful Rest Cemetery. Mr. Smith was born on June 10, 1928 in Metcalfe to the late Walter Smith and Linnie Conner Smith. He would marry Ms. Carolyn Lawyer and their union would last until her death. Mr. Smith worked as a butcher for Sunnyland Meat Co. until the time of his retirement. He departed this life on Friday, August 17, 2012 at Orange Park Medical in Jacksonville, FL. Survivors to cherish his memory include his daughters Sonya Smith and Bobbie Smith both of Thomasville; Brenda Thomas (Ronald) of Jacksonville, FL; Valerie Wynn (Stanley) of Pavo; Dora Edwards (Fredderick) of Cairo; sons Hiram Smith (Geraldine), Ned Smith, Jr. (Alma), and Guy Smith (Latril) all of Thomasville; Bernard Smith of Waycross; Tyrone Smith (Angela), Derrick Smith (Gloria) and Willie Smith (Danielle) all of Atlanta; 30 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; devoted nephews Walter Smith of Ft. Walton Beach, FL; Jackson Smith, Jr. of Thomasville; Dr. Scharazard Gray of South Dakota; sisters-in-law Mattie Andrew (Thomas), Crotel Lawyer, Zeda Lawyer, Leola Lawyer and Gloria McCutchin all of Thomasville; Beatrice Lawyer of Thomasville; a devoted friend Johnny Crawford Jr. of Thomasville; and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends. Ned Smith, Sr. was preceded in death by his brother Jackson Smith, Sr. and three sisters Clifford Lee Davis, Doretha Gamble, and Alice Mae Warmack. The remains will lie instate at the church from 10 a.m. until the funeral hour with no viewing after the eulogy. The family will receive friends after the services at First Unity Missionary Baptist Church. Family and friends are asked to meet at 427 Jones St. at 10 a.m. for the processional. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Friday, August 24, 2012 from 12 Noon until 7:30 p.m. — Grooms Funeral Home
