Thomasville ordinance defines noise

A Thomasville ordinance says it is unlawful to emit a noise at a volume that disturbs others.
“If it’s heard by others, it’s too loud,” said Lt. Eric Hampton, Thomasville Police Department public information officer.
Citizens complain to police about the noises, and officers themselves hear it when responding.
The noise comes from residences and vehicles.
“A lot of it is coming from night parties,” Hampton said.
Complaints are about loud music, loud talking and the revving of vehicles engines in quiet neighborhoods at night.
Police receive constant complaints about the noise, including from the elderly whose sleep is disturbed.
“Police take it seriously and want to ensure loud noises do not disturb citizens, particularly the elderly,” the officer explained.
According to the city noise ordinance, a sound is an unlawful noise if it can be heard 100 or more feet away from the source.
With warmer days and nights, outdoor activities are increasing, along with the noise.
“We want to caution people that they can be cited for it,” Hampton said.
People are cited on a regular basis for violation of the local law when they refuse to comply. Only a warning is needed in some incidents.
“We don’t want to dampen someone’s barbecue, but when noises affect others, police step in,” the officer said.
Noise violations may be reported to dispatch at 226-2101.
