Options for how to repair or replace a defunct chiller unit at Cairo High School was a priority topic at the May 10 Grady County Board of Education meeting.

The chiller — or air-conditioning — unit covers the school’s science wing, offices and main hall, fifth wing and cafeteria/kitchen. It is currently down two compressors and unable to adequately cool its coverage area.
The chiller system was installed in 1997 and, in June 2009, one of the two compressors in one of the two units crashed.
Another compressor died last week, leaving the following two under extreme strain and the possibility of another compressor crashing at any time.
Options brought before the board for consideration were: replace the crashed compressor with a rebuilt one, purchase a new chiller unit, or replace all areas covered by the chiller system with wall-hung units with individual heat pumps.
