A memorial service celebrating Cynthia Smith Dubose’s life is at 11 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 13, 2010 at Berceuse Funeral and Cremation Traditions, 2609 Cunningham Drive, Hampton, Va. On Oct. 29, she took wings and left this place to seek peace and joy in the arms of God. Born June 7, 1945, in Tallahassee, Fla., she was a daughter of Edward H. and Minnie Gardner Smith. She spent her childhood and youth in Thomasville, Ga. She earned a BA from Fisk University. She went on to receive her master’s in social work from Atlanta University and completed her doctoral course work at Norfolk State University. Her career spanned over four decades, and after 22 years with Newport News Public Schools, she retired in 2008. She is remembered fondly by her colleagues for her kindness, humor, and generous spirit. After retirement, she spent two years in Los Angeles enjoying exciting new experiences and time with her daughter. When it became necessary for her to return to Hampton, she was lovingly cared for by her husband, John and her sister, Edwina — her “angels.” She adored family and friends above all else and was surrounded by those who loved her during her final days in this physical world. The family will always remember the loving care and special acts of kindness shown to Cyndi during her illness by Delores Woodley, Vivian Carter, Barbara Meredith, Carolyn Ruffin, Kitty Morgan and Linda Brown. She is survived by her husband John Dubose of Hampton; sons, Ahmed of Hampton, Hassan (Charon) of Newport News;, her daughters, Khalilah of Los Angeles, Roxanne Davis of New York City; grandsons, Ka’jai, Asim, and Nazir of Newport News; granddaughters, Dyeemah and Jeonte of New York City; sister, Edwina Smith Davis Gary (Richard) of Suffolk; her nephew, niece, three cousins and four aunts. Her parents, grandparents, four aunts, seven uncles, and five cousins preceded her in death. Memorial contributions can be made to: Agape International Spiritual Center, 5700 Buckingham Parkway, No. 200, Culver City, Calif. 90230. — Poole’s Funeral Home, Smithfield, Va.
