Low turnout expected

THOMASVILLE — Although voters in seven Thomas County cities will cast ballots Tuesday, an elections official predicts a low voter turnout.

“I’m looking for about a 20 percent (voter turnout) this time. That’s the total turnout for Thomasville and the small cities,” said Vickie Burnette, Thomas County probate judge and superintendent of elections.

Voters will go to the polls today in Thomasville, Boston, Barwick, Pavo, Coolidge, Meigs and Ochlocknee.

Thomasville voters will choose a Thomasville City Council member and Thomasville City school board members.

Mayors and/or city council members will be elected in the six small towns.

Polls open at 7 a.m. and close at 7 p.m. today.

Poll workers will conduct elections in Thomasville and the small cities and take voting machine results— voting machine memory cards — to the Thomas County Courthouse.

Votes will be tabulated in the second-floor courtroom at the courthouse. Voting results will be show on a giant screen in the courtroom as votes are tabulated.

“I expect it to be very quick,” Burnette said about vote tabulations.

The voter turnout in 2005 local municipal elections was 20 percent. The turnout in 2007 municipal elections was 21.5 percent.

“I think its going to be really low,” Burnette said about today’s voter turnout. “I hope I’m wrong.”
