Central receivers excelling at blocking

THOMASVILLE — Silas Rogers’ job is about as exciting as that of the Maytag repairman. Glory and adulation rarely come his way — just like the football.

Rogers, you see, is a wide receiver for Thomas County Central. The senior spends most of his time blocking in the Yellow Jackets run-based attack.

“We’re kind of like the offensive linemen. We just do what we can to help the team,” said Rogers, referring to fellow receivers Bernard Farley, Jermaine Miller and others. “If you want to win it all, you’ve got to do your job.”

In a 44-13 Class AAAA playoff win against Brunswick on Friday, Central’s receivers helped spring Central’s backs for four touchdown runs of at least 20 yards.

“The fans may not see what we do, but our teammates know about it,” Rogers said. Rogers would like to catch more passes — he ranks second on the team with seven for 97 yards — but he understands his role.

“People ask me all the time, ‘Why haven’t you caught more pass,’” Rogers said. “But, hey, when your opportunity comes, you just have to take advantage of it.”

“Our receivers do a good job of blocking,” Central coach Ed Pilcher said.

n DISAPPOINTMENT — The Yellow Jackets rolled up 407 yards in the first half against the Pirates before turning the game over to reserves. The second-string offense mounted only 31 total yards and one first down.

“I’m a little disappointed in our second team,” Pilcher said. “We’ve just got to get better. We’ve got to get the offensive line cranked up a little better.”

Central uses a seven-player rotation in its first-team offensive line. “Those guys did a great job in the first half,” Pilcher said. “Hunter Poole had some big-time blocks, and so did Davis McDermond, Zack Stanaland and Steven Powell. Those guys were doing a great job — they really were.” Another area of dissatisfaction for Pilcher involved yellow flags. Central was penalized 13 times for 115 yards.

“We had three or four facemask penalties,” Pilcher said. “I don’t want to take away from their aggression, but we’ve got to do better than that.”

n SECOND-ROUND TICKETS — Due to the Thanksgiving holidays, tickets for Friday’s Class AAAA second-round playoff game between Whitewater and Central will be on sale at the high school Monday and Tuesday only from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. in the counselors office.

Tickets will then be on sale at the gate before the game. General admission tickets are $10 and reserved tickets are $12.
